I don't think you waste his or our time with PGC. That means you bring in someone else to head the offense who you'll....what, demote or fire after a season or two after Callaway has "proven himself"?

Well, in his defense, unlike Brady he didn't have a Spring to prove it to O or E on the field.

Did i say he was trash?? No. Stop assuming. I said comparing being OC at Samford to OC at LSU is not the same. Hell that’s basically like being an OC at a 5A school. Just saying i would like to see him prove himself before we just gove him the reigns. Not that hard to understand.

He frickin young and talented as f! He has to start somewhere!!!
If he gets passed up, you damn well KNOW someone is gonna pick him up fast! Russ Callaway lives and breathes football! He is a football genius! That’s all he ever cared about —everyone knows that. Grew up in the middle of it all with the Georgia Bulldogs, 2 years at Alabaman. He knows it all!

Anything he had done “or allowed to do” in football has been successful. OC at Samford bc he’s young—and super loyal. He had other offers last year and went with Coach O and Coach E bc he liked what he saw at LSU—even though he knew he was walking into building a brand new team. Coach O knows all this.

Chemistry is a big part of success. Pelini and Linehan didn’t have chemistry with anyone, but Callaway was a top notch favorite with the coaches and players.

I am really hoping Russ Callaway doesn’t get overlooked for someone less deserving and less capable. I 100% believe in Callaway!

LSU should at least make him PGC with input on the offense. Someone else is going to give him a job before LSU does at OC. If they go cheap that should be their pick, imo.

There is never certainty that a new coaching hire will guarantee the success you desire. Sometimes the current results are so bad that the inherent risk of a new hire is worthwhile. As is the case with LSU's DC. There is no guarantee the new hire will be better than this season. But we know it will be hard to be worse. It's worth the risk to make a change.

Offensively, LSU wasn't the juggarnaut they were in 2019. But they weren't horrible either. Particularly, when one considers the inexperience and massive change in personnel from last season. If LSU gets the same type of performance with even a mildly competent defense this season, they are probably at worst, 7-3. Point being, I think many believe the offensive performance wasn't bad enough take on the risk of a new scheme/system. They prefer to see what will happen next year with, now, experienced guys playing in this scheme with a new defense.

There wasn't a ton of excitement when Pelini was hired. But NO ONE thought it would be THIS bad. It would be a shame if you fix the defense only to have the offense perform poorly because the new hire wasn't any good.

What abt my post was ridiculous?

Maybe this:

go after any young assistant who is fresh off the tit.

4 years as an OC is not inexperienced. In 2016 Samford scored 41 on Miss St. LSU scored 23. In 2018 they had over 500 yards offense and 26 points on FSU. He was coaching Max up on the sideline the last 2 games.

He may not be ready or the right guy, but he deserves a look.

I agree they should get him, but going cheap may not seal the deal. He had several other SEC schools talking to him last year. I’m sure they’d be even more interested in him this year. Callaway deserves “at least” what Brady got.

So then we should just give the job to anyone with a years worth of OC experience?

Literally no one has said that.

How do you know he wasn't in the room or what role he had.

We all praise Saban on his ability to hire coordinators.

But go look at history of OCs. He would NEVER give the head offensive coodinator duties to someone whos best resume item is the OC at SAMFORD fricking University.

You have to earn this gig. Give him QBs or PGC or something.

And this says nothing about whether or not he would be successful. I dont know. He may be great as an OC and an absolute diamond in the rough.

This board will turn on anyone. Callaway was everyone's darling here and I guess I missed where all of the sudden he's FCS trash.

It’s just the guys with no vision who would have passed on hiring Brady for the role he really had rather than recognizing talent.

If Callaway gets the job, it’s because E says he’s ready. E’s the one who wanted to hire Brady based on a meeting with him. He also hired Callaway away from an OC job to be an analyst here, so I’m going to go with his call over the fricking Rant. And if Callaway doesn’t get the job, then you’ll know they E thinks he’s not ready.

E may not be the best playcaller in the world, but he’s a good coach and he obviously has an eye for young coaches on the way up.

Listen to yourself

You want the guy on the way out to make an hire from
Someone on staff

That’s basically saying we didn’t have any coaching problems last year.

Because if E feels that way about Calloway, he should have listened to him lastbyear

What makes you so sure E’s on the way out? There are as many rumors out there that he will just take a different offensive staff position.

Again, I trust what the man thinks as a coach and evaluator and you know good and damn well that O is going to ask his opinion on this.

If most of you have your way, he will be gone and will continue his rise somewhere else. If he had no OC experience, I would agree with you, but he does and he was very successful, even against FBS competition.

What was Calloway's role this year?

I've heard he was lead offensive analyst, but then I've heard he coached on the field as well.

The thing we know for sure is that he worked with the QBs.

I mean LSU literally tweeted out that E was retiring from on the field coaching. He’s either going into administration or he’s moving to analyst

I dont Think

“E likes him and his offense was good at Samford”

Means more than actually coaching a good FBS or even P5 offense.

Here is where I’m coming from. We need to spend what it takes on a legit DC who will undo the damage done and get us back on track quickly. Combine that and the several other staff positions we need to replace, then we likely aren’t getting a high dollar OC.
Why not at least look at the guy you have on staff who has proven themselves as an OC? What do you think we will get on the open market if we aren’t paying top dollar with huge buyouts? It won’t be the names you guys are throwing out there.

At the very least, Callaway deserves an on-field position this year. If not, then some other team is giving him one. The QB progression this year absolutely justifies this, no matter what reservations you have about him being a P5 OC.
