Gundy won 10+ games in 8 out of the last 16 seasons - what happened?

He’s done it twice in the last 5 seasons. At Oklahoma St, a mid P5 program.
A few years ago, he would have been on the short list for any HC job. Went 3-9 last year, started 1-2 this year, now all of a sudden he’s dogshit?
It’s strange what’s happened to the perception of Mike Gundy. Is he done, or is there a path to a redemption arc and him getting re-established as one of the best HC’s in the game?

Gundy discarded the NIL game

Seems like a solvable problem at the right program.

Been there way too long and OSU is considered the little brother in Oklahoma
NIL comes along and things change quickly
TT is now daddy on the block?
change is good sometimes

NIL has completely changed the game
Constructing a roster is almost completely different
Having to coach guys knowing if you coach them too hard they can just hit the portal, etc.

I am convinced that you can be a good coach and still "max out" with a team, such that parting ways is better for both.
In the NFL, I think a prime example is Andy Reid with the Eagles. I also think Mike Tomlin is another one who has reached that point.
A G5 or lower tier p4 could do a lot worse, though I don't think he'll ever be "elite" or get an upper echelon p4 job.

I don’t think it was a lack of money. But I don’t have a good understanding. I was a huge fan of his but I too didn’t understand why he fell off a cliff.

NIL.
The entire landscape of college football changed. As a coach, you can either get with it or get lost. Gundy chose the latter.

Gundy and Dabo are examples of guys who just didn't adapt.

Sure but it doesn't mean a change of scenery and an established system can't benefit Gundy. LSU is a machine just needing a captain. Kelly didn't do shite and we were on the verge of success. We have Frank and Austin Thomas and staff ready to roll.

I think OSU was starving him out so played the "don't need it" game.

Gundy was great at identifying and developing players over a long process.
He refused to adapt to NIL until it was too late, and he got complacent.
He had a run of picking good coordinators, right up until he didn’t.
Finally, he had a seventh year QB who fell flat on his face.

No. Gundy refused to play the NIL game. Money was left unspent. The new coach will have the resources he needs.

OK State doesn't have the dedicated boosters and who wants to be in Stillwater.
