my point is the coach doesn't make the player. the player makes the player. coaches are like teachers, they are in fact, teachers. they can only do so much and then it's up to the player.
i hear all the time, if only we had a qb coach. i don't think a great qb coach would make jordan jefferson much better than he is today. the kid is limited. he was on a great high school team with great talent around him.
i can give you Big ben, brett favre, kurt warner (arena football), flaco, tony romo, david garrard. they all (one from curley?) received better coaching at lower level schools than the heath shulers, chad henne's, matt leinart's, vince young's, brady quinn's of the world?
why is it tom brady, who shared time with a better talented prospect in drew henson, the better qb? he was coached by the same guy.
we'll go with your guy ponder. (who i agree is a very good qb.) who was the lower rated player coming out of high school? ponder, lee, weatherford, manuel. answer, ponder was the lowest of them. the other guy's have more talent. why is it he developed better? they were all coached by the same guy.
none of that makes sense to me if the coach can "develop" the player. they should all be good. not one or the other.

Then let's try it this way. He never took a snap as an NFL QB. Maybe they ran him out there in minicamps or whatever, but the only time he ever hit the field in a real game he was on defense/ST. Is that fair?

I got crucified for saying something similar a few weeks ago.
Talents wins 90% of games IMO. Teams with better players almost always win.
I think most people overvalue "coaching", but it is still important. I'm not sure what I think about the balance of the two worlds.
Obviously a guy like Harbaugh is winning with decidedly less talent that probably half of his opponents (though he did have the best QB in the nation) and a great QB can cover a multitude of sins.
ETA: I always see these discussions about players landing in the right "situation" and that's why they are great.
I've seen some say the careers of Aaron Rodgers and Alex Smith could have been reversed had Rodgers gone to San Franciso and Smith to Green Bay. I think it'd be more apt to say the fortunes of either franchise would be different... Some guys are just going to be great... and nothing is going to stand in their way.

well, i've been called dumb, crazy, and an idiot. however, i'd like to think that at least i put some thought into my analysis.
for every great coach, they usually have great talent. it's what makes them great. saban was the same 6-6 as shula was the year before because he had the same talent. if he coached at vandy, i don't think he secures great talent and i don't think he plays in an s.e.c. championship game or n.c. game.
jim h is a great coach. however, he has a lot more talent today than he did four years ago when they won one game. heck, he's had the heisman runner up the last two years.
maybe it's great coaches can evaluate the talent. they see something in a kid, whether is ponder, toby g, hester, tyran m., ect that makes them great.

This is still a real possibility. Crowton would have to get a new job in order to leave.
