Payton was upset for a minute that O was entertaining offers from LSU and Tennessee while the Saints were still in the playoff hunt in 08.

Going from a position coach to a DC is a move up, even if it’s college and not pro. The last thing a head coach needs is a rep for blocking guys from improving their careers. Ideally, you want good coaches on their way up to see you as a launching pad.

Football Scoop also "broke the story" that Freeman was choosing LSU. Forgive me if I am not too optimistic.

Literally every insider was reporting that Freeman was choosing LSU. Everyone from hacks like Lonn all the way up to confirmed insiders like Shea Dixon.

That being said all I can say about football scoop and one podcast is that I have no idea if they’re right this time but they’ve been right before

There's a difference in people being wrong, and people being right and the story changes.

To be fair, it sounds like LSU thought Freeman was choosing them as well. Ausberry even said as much in a radio interview the following week. The owner of football scoop lives here in BR. I suspect he has better contacts with LSU than most other schools. If the SCHOOL is telling you the hire is a "done deal", then I don't know how much stronger of a source you can get. It sounds like LSU may have been overly optimistic...not football scoop.

The Orgeron/Nielsen connections are too strong and the fact LSU was essentially silent (after Freeman) until the point the Saints were eliminate seems to make it pretty clear it's Nielsen's job if he wants it.

Sean Payton Relieved Orgeron Left Saints
JAN 2, 2009 12:47 PM

A source close to Saints' Coach Sean Payton indicated that Payton was relieved Ed Orgeron was moving on as the defensive coordinator of the University of Tennessee after his interest with college jobs had become an increasing distraction the past several weeks. Apparently, some within the organization felt Orgeron was more focused on his coaching future than his current job, and Payton grew tired of Orgeron juggling phone calls from LSU and Tennessee. The source also suggested that Payton was not very pleased with the progress of the defensive line under Orgeron

Did Shea say it was a done deal, the way that Football scoop did? I don't remember seeing that.

I'm more concerned that Dan Campbell might want him.. than I am about Payton blocking the interview.

Heard from really good sauce that it was a “done deal.”

Same sauce never used those words for Freeman. They only had confidence with that one.

I’m 99.99% confident that Nielsen is a done deal in this scenario.

I was just pointing out that they broke the news and were incorrect when it was all said and done.

#LSU is working on finalizing a deal to name #Saints assistant Ryan Nielsen their new Defensive Coordinator sources tell me. Nielsen met with Sean Payton and told him of his intention to take the job earlier today.
