Is your implication, here, that having several different position coaches and coordinators and repeated shifts in scheme and personnel is actually *better* for player development than having continuity? Because you get to try out a whole wide range of different practice styles and developmental techniques and scheme? Because that's absurd. In any event, i agree with your general take that I don't think we have nearly enough evidence to blame him for the terrible safety play. We just had bad players. The one thing I will question slightly is why we didn't see more of dashawn spears and, if it's because he wasn't the best guy at his position, why he apparently hasn't developed at all. If he comes out and balls out next year, I'll probably be very comfortable with where our safety room is at, with or without bradford. But if Spears is just as useless and the guys from 2024 and 2023, I'm going to start getting very skeptical that olsen is the right guy for the job.

I know very little about this kid, so I'm certainly not discounting the possibility that he'll become a good or even great player, but that's a completely insane comp to throw around for all but the absolute elite of the elite prospects.


Will Campbell's relative athletic score from the combine puts him in the 99th percentile of all OTs invited to the combine since 1987 (#17 out of 1395 total), and that's with his height/weight ("only" ~70th percentile) dragging him down a bit. In other words, he's among the best athletes we've ever seen on the offensive line. And on top of that, he was a 3-year starter at left tackle in the SEC *and* a 3x all-conference selection. In other words, he was among the most game-ready prospects and is among the earliest and most consistent elite performers we've ever seen on the offensive line.


By no means do i believe that recruiting rankings should be taken as gospel, but one thing I do know is that if a kid is both a) among the best athletes ever at his position, AND b) so refined technically and developed physically as to be ready to play at a high level at a premium position from day one... it's pretty easy to peg that guy as a blue-chip recruit, even on limited exposure. That's not to say that the recruiting gurus and scouts will necessarily be able to identify the kid as a future top-5 pick... but he certainly won't go overlooked as a mid-tier 3*.



Again: This kid might turn out to be awesome... But I'm extremely skeptical that he currently looks like a future will campbell.

Lol what? This isn't true at all. He's a good recruiter (or was one, at least), no question. And his Louisiana ties made his recruiting prowess especially valuable to out-of-state programs (Miami, USC). But he's really never been viewed as anything much more than average as an actual coach and developer.


For one thing, his brand of go-go-go recruiting is much less valuable in the NIL era, where sheer stamina in relationship-building and -maintenance is no longer enough to get signatures. And for two, we're already operating at more-or-less max capacity with respect to our in-state recruiting: The kids we lose are pretty much always money-centric losses or kids who were looking to leave the state all along. O doesn't do much to help with either of those categories. And if he's not bringing a ton of recruiting value then he's not bringing much value in general - and certainly not enough to justify the circus that would unquestionably result.

Man, honestly we're shaping up to be pretty loaded, at least depth-wise, at safety. Whether we have any true impact starters (or even solid starters) is another question, but at least from a long-term perspective safety looks quite healthy.

Just in terms of underclassmen, we've got: Dashawn Spears, who was apparently turning all sorts of heads last offseason, as an incoming true freshman... tamarcus cooley, as a flexible piece who can handle safety or nickel...tylen singleton, a highly-rated recruit who was seen as a LB/S hybrid and could maybe work his way into the rotation at star.... then jhase thomas, jacob bradford, and CJ Jimcoily all incoming in the 2025 class, along with charles ross who may well wind up at safety as well. That's quite a few guys with real potential.


And then you look ahead to the 2026 cycle and you've got an extremely good shot at grabbing multiple safeties ranked inside the top ~50 overall in the country (depending on the service). Fast forward a year or two and LSU is gonna be loaded on the back end.

You said this in response to my statements that 1) most guys won't be cool with waiting until year 4 to start (and that that it's not "short sighted" to go somewhere where you can play before year 4), and 2) Kyle Parker will be WR4 or 5 at absolute best in 2025. Not sure how anything in your comment changes or disputes my point. Yes: A.Anderson, Brown, Hilton, and maybe N.Anderson will probably go pro after the 2025 season. Even if we assume that their departure will make Kyle Parker one of our no-doubt starting WRs for 2026, that still means his first real opportunity will come in year 4.

Parker was a member of the 2023 class. The 2023 college season was his first year in college. 2024, last season, was his second year. 2025, the upcoming season, will be his third year. We both agree that he will not be a starter or (barring major injury problems in our WR room) even see significant rotational snaps.


That means that 2026 - his fourth year in college - will be his first real opportunity to get on the field.



My point stands: The large majority of guys--at least guys who have a chance to be real contributors at some point--are not going to be willing to wait around until year 4 to get their chance to play, and it's not "really short sighted" to go somewhere you'll get on the field before year 4. Which part of this do you disagree with? The first part (that most guys won't wait til year 4)? Or the second part (that it's not short-sighted to not want to wait til year 4)?


(Also, none of this even takes into consideration the fact that our QB room is a total question mark post-2025. So he'd be waiting around until year 4 to play with who knows who, with only ONE year of eligibility remaining if the QB situation is shaky or bad in 2026)

I agree wholeheartedly with your general sentiment that the derek williams stuff probably isn't legitimate, but i don't agree with this statement. In situtations where a kid has a specific destination planned out, it's completely possible that people with the destination program would know before people at the current program. In fact, in situations where the destination is planned out even before the current season ends--as was allegedly the case, here--Id go so far as to say it might even play out that way in a majority of cases: If the kid knows he's leaving and knows where he's going then he'd pretty much have to have things locked up with the destination school (obviously behind the scenes through back channels) before breaking the news to the current school.


In any event, I don't think any of that is the case here. There was never an iota of legitimate smoke around derek williams - unless you count moscona as a legitimate source, which I unequivocally do not. This was all just wishful thinking coupled with a guy playing into his audience's wishful thinking in a (successful) attempt to get clicks/views.

Let me start by pointing out that "3-4 star guys" is a pretty massive bucket. That includes everyone from the #33 ranked guy down to the #1000+ ranked guy. Your point, though, seems to be that Texas built its elite DL more through scouting and development of lower-tier recruits than by bringing in blue-chip studs. Well unfortunately that's just not the case.


Texas's DL rotation basically consists of Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton on the interior (with Bill Norton, and Jermayne Lole spelling them), and trey Moore, Colin Simmons, barryn simmons, and Ethan Burke at the DE/EDGE spots. Of that core group, Collins and Simmons were both 5*, Broughton was a high 4* (#122 overall), and trey moore was a highly rated transfer when texas landed him (4*, #3 edge in the portal, 93 rating (would be tied for the 2nd highest-rated guy in LSU's current transfer class)). Burke and Sorrell were both nice development jobs (both high 3*) (and their secondary rotational guys on the interior are mid-level transfers), but other than those 2, the main contributors have pretty elite pedigree (also worth noting that they rush the passer quite a bit with anthony hill (LB), who was also a 5*).

...the On3 Industry rankings put 6 Louisiana kids in the top 78 overall for the 2026 cycle. If that holds, it will be only the second Louisiana class in the past decade (along with 2022) to hit that mark. And that's even before you account for the fact that Louisiana, being a state with a less-developed camp/7x7 circuit and fewer true (national-level) powerhouse programs than the other states with a comparable talent pool, has among the most late risers of any state - which means that the top of the heap at the end of a given cycle is likely to look better than the top of the heap in the preceding January.


It's an excellent Louisiana class. Even more exciting for the fact that it seems to have lots of kids at premium positions.

1) He's an EDGE, not a DT


2) There was never really any actual talk about him coming to LSU beyond people on this board pointing out that a potentially exciting player with a connection to our staff had entered the portal. There was zero reporting to suggest that we were ever involved.


3) Did you really need to make a post for this when a simple google would've sufficed? It's much easier to google "5* missouri transfer" and then just read the text that pops up immediately than to come to TD, click to start making a post, type out a whole post, post it, wait, then come back and sift through the replies first looking for the answer then looking for confirmation that the answer wasn't just someone fricking with you, until you've satisfied yourself that the info is correct.


4) He's going to Nebraska, as was the expectation virtually all along
Who cares? This is just the way things work. You can either spend your time getting upset about 95% of all recruitments or just accept that it's the rule, not the exception.


Funny that you never hear anyone complain about this when we're recruiting a kid committed somewhere else lol

you’re an idiot if you think most guys will be cool with waiting until year 4 to start. That’s how it would shake out for Parker. This was year 2, next year will be year 3 (and he’ll be WR4-5 at absolute best). It’s not “really short sighted” for a guy to want to play prior to year 4.

what?? kelly’s problem has been putting TOO much emphasis on experience to start the season and not getting the best players on the field until it’s week 5 and we’ve already lost a game or two. Hell, some of the young guys we played in our final two games this year looked like they should’ve very clearly been on the field all along. At some point you have to trust the young guys to step in - you can’t keep shoving them out or you’re going to lose them and then find yourself in a position where you have no choice but to rebuild every season

But this is exactly the point: Good roster management ISNT just taking any upgrade you can get, regardless of who you already have. If you've got a kid you really really like who's a rising sophomore at a premium position, you don't want to take a portal player who blocks him unless its a major major upgrade and you have a pretty complete roster - because a) it's not a one-for-one trade; you're pushing out a guy who'd give you multiple years of high-end play in exchange for a minor upgrade in the first of those years only and then a gaping hole the second year; and b) you're operating under the constraint of scarcity: Given limited resources, you don't want to spend major resources on a minor upgrade when you have other spots of greater need, where even spending a portion of that money might produce a bigger improvement to your overall team.


Hell, it's even more complicated than that: For instance, if you happen to have a stacked group of incoming freshmen at the position in question, you can more safely afford to push a potentially elite 2nd year guy out in favor of a one-year rental, because you can afford to count on that elite freshmen group to produce the necessary year-2 starter(s) you'll need once your rental is gone. On the flip side, if you're dealing with a position where your incoming class is weak, then you probably DONT feel good counting on those guys to be ready to contribute in year 2 - in which case it makes a lot less sense to prioritize the one-year rental over the rising sophomore who can hold down the fort for multiple years, even if the first of those years falls slightly short of the performance you'd have expected from the rental.




It all boils down to one guiding principle: The more desperate you are at a given position, the more likely you are to overpay for a transfer at that spot. This means that if you want to maximize your bang for your buck, you need to be deliberate in avoiding any major holes in your roster, which in turn means that sometimes you need to prioritize the long-term health of a position group over maximizing it for any one given year. You absolutely cannot afford to simply bring in all the best players who you can convince to come - you have to be strategic about it, and you have to plan for the long term. You'll have far more chances to max out your roster if you pick your spots and keep your roster balanced year-over-year than you will if you try each year to "build the best possible roster and let the chips lie where they lie". That's how you back yourself into corners.

On the one hand, yes, it's true that you don't want one-year rent-a-players to form the basis of your *program*, but having a large number for one year here and there isn't the same as what Ole Miss has been doing in the portal era. At some point, they will have a cycle where they miss on more than their fair share of portal signees, and it will look like 2024 FSU.


On the other hand, it's also true that the people on this board talking about how its bad to have a team full of mercenaries were primarily just trying to make themselves feel better about the fact that Ole Miss had a better roster than we did/hit the portal much more effectively than we did last year
