Think about it

If he was working on something with USC weeks ago spreading LSU rumors only helps his negotiations. It allows him to publicly deny he is going to LSU. It is the perfect cover for Riley.

Someone was feeding the Riley rumors and it wasn’t the usual LSU people.

Probably Riley ...and maybe USC agent once the deal was inked

Agreed that this is a real possibility

I don't know. I have a feeling that these two schools very possibly ended up better off, and maybe even WAY better off.

A little added bonus for Riley to stick it to LSU after getting skullfricked in the Playoffs in 2019.

i’m genuinely asking, why? this a suspicion based on the talk of him wanting to avoid SEC play? or do you think both of these programs can get a better X & O’s coach based on what you’ve seen in his short stint at Oklahoma?

Yes. Riley deliberately mentioned LSU not being his coaching destination. They were throwing off the scent.

Now I can’t tell you exactly why they did this, or why the spread of these rumors was primarily spread by LSU fans, but it was pretty clearly deliberate. Also seems pretty clear LSU had legitimate interest, simplest explanation is they used that interest for leverage

But absent a signed offer or at least LOI, I just don’t see how Woodward would have let it advance this far. Riley would have been a huge splash hire, I understand the appeal, but you can let him hold your search hostage and eliminate your advantage by getting O out the way mid season. He just isn’t that good.

One thing I take away from this is that Bob Stoops is a saint. Could have easily just chilled at his cushy tv job and told y'all "my bad"

Only way he could beat LSU.

As a side note, Woodward was probably bathing in the free smoke knowing he had his guy.

That is because he never held the search hostage. It was never Riley just smoke by his agent. People close to the program we’re saying it wasn’t Riley the whole time.

Both programs know what it takes to win.

They'll recover. LSU didn't really lose anything. Just a little hit publicly. OU has their work cut out for them.

Lincoln will always be a bitch. That'll never change.

His stint wasn't that short. 2 years offensive coordinator, then 5 more as head coach. More than enough to perform a fair objective evaluation and get a grasp on long-term trajectories, as well as elicit overall style and attitude now and going forward.

So X & O's, not so much better for OU. Toughness and ruthlessness? Yeah I think we can easily upgrade on that at OU from Riley.

As far as LSU is concerned, I figure you guys will get somebody to come in, make a big splash (perhaps involving an NC). Then as the reality of consistency becomes ever harsher and harsher, that coach will move along.

But I have absolutely no inside information on anything whatsoever and don't care to. Just my opinion.

Honestly I don't really buy the SECphobia theory. That however won't stop me from upvoting every post on every message board I see suggesting it.

This…And then, right on cue, LSU fans label them delusional. The smoke 100% came from the LSU side, and it wasn’t the administration. They just quietly took advantage of it.

If Riley wasn't interested in LSU and vice versa, then everyone involved loved the Riley to LSU rumors: LSU, USC, and Riley. It kept the heat off everyone.

I think Woodward was making a run at Riley for sure, then USC jumped in the mix and with the same money he knew Riley wouldn't come to BR. So likely, the offer was on the table from LSU when USC came knocking and Riley's agent leaked an LSU deal to get the money up from USC.
At that point Woodward saw the writing on the wall and then you notice the rumor and smoke died down the past couple weeks.

How did LSU get fricked? LR was our smokescreen there was some initial interest but rumored offers turned out to be BS once Riley let Woody know he was scared of the SEC.

Honestly, Riley’s soft finesse lines would have problems in the SEC as shown in the playoff meetings. OU should look at this as a blessing and opportunity to hire a stronger coach.

Agree 100%.

Especially the last sentence. There's been many questions here along the lines of "does Scott read TD?". The answer is yes. Well, people do it for him; TD and every other rumor-mill source of information.

Once he realized that LR, his agent, and probably USC were using those rumors to their advantage having pumped them up he realized the was the abused in the relationship and LR was going a different route. He might or might not have known it was USC. But he certainly saw the heat rise in regards to LR & LSU and knew what that meant.

Jesus Christ. LSU's covetousness of Lincoln Riley and its purported offer was the worst kept secret in football over the last month. My guess is that the Riley talk was never as serious as many of you sociopaths thought.
