This is a sneaky good hire IMO.

FWIW, I think so too. He's a good hire because he brings even-keeled personality with a business like approach, seems very level headed and knowledgeable about the game, and obviously wants a shot at the big boys and has the confidence to think he can make waves in the SEC.

Sneaky because NOBODY would've expected it or had him on their radar. Nobody thought he would possibly leave Boise for anywhere short of a dream job destination, and Auburn snagged him.

I think he'll be a solid coach and get them consistent results, probably contend for the SEC champ every few years and be a close runner up in the West more often. He'll produce 9-3 to 11-1 seasons regularly, then compete for the SEC championship and make the playoffs when the chips fall just right once every 5-ish years.

The only concern for this hire is his recruiting in the area, it'll be hugely important for him to hire the right big time assistants.

This is a nice hire IMO. Only question will be is he able to get the recruiters needed to compete on the trail. Harsin is sharp, well done Auburn.

Doesn't take away from the fact that 15 of his 18 losses were to inferior team. Congrats on the meh hire

I think that's not a bad hire. Better than Steele.

Didn't Kirby lose to Saban again this year? Championship coach

This. The obsession with “big names” is dumb. Seems the big names fail at the new school as often as they succeed, if not more.

This. Hugh Freeze was definitely not a splash hire either.

Keep deflecting from your "splashy" hire

By the way, yours lost to Willy Freaking Taggart last year

You might want to re-check that score.

He has 26 losses as a head coach, not 18. And 23 of them were to unranked teams.

How many of Kirb's 14 losses at UGa were to better teams, and how many were to inferior ones?

Just trying to get a gauge on your criteria.

Both won the Broyles award and had HC jobs based on being elite coordinators

If anyone didn't know who either of those guys were, they don't watch SEC football.

But, this is the SEC and much of his job is about recruiting. This guy is an unknown commodity whereas Cristobal and Napier are southerners who are proven recruiters in the south.

This myth that SEC ties are a requirement for recruiting success is dumb... maybe 20 years ago it mattered, but recruiting is national for everyone... players and programs.

The two best recruiters the SEC has seen this century were midwestern catholics from Ohio.

Yikes.

I’ll just pretend this wasn’t said.

They had both won the Broyles Award while at Auburn as coordinators, years before they were both hired as head coaches.

Gus was getting every dollar of that contract whether we fired in this year, 2021, or 2022.

Gus had to go. We saw zero player development and big time gaps in recruiting- especially offensive line.

When a coach’s best season is his first, and he’s had 8 years to build a program, but loses 4 games a year, it is time to move on.

Harsin will get his chance. He will either win or be fired.

I am not gonna lie to you, Hugh Freeze would have been scary as Hell at Auburn. He beat Saban 2 times and back to back at Ole Miss. He has tremendous baggage and I understand why he was not your guy, but damn! he would have wrecked shite at Auburn.

If you use the Saban test of your hire: ask yourself if Saban would be more worried about Freeze or Harsin?

Everywhere Freeze has gone he has won big after year 1. So year 2 Auburn would have contended for an SEC. I know this for sure. Let’s see where AU is in a couple of years. Good luck with your coach!

Oh, Thank God AU did not hire Joey Freshwater! Again, would have competed for an SEC immediately or year 2.

AU is gonna have to wait and see but I for one and double thankful for who they did not hire!
