I think you may be onto something. Landry is probably worried that ultimately the university ends up being the guarantor of last resort for these ridiculous contracts.
Maybe Landry said what he said to basically to mean don't expect ANY potential backstopping help from the state

that's always been the plan, right? He messed up his career earlier, went through the coaching rehab with Saban, and has been climbing back up. His goal was never to end at Ole Miss, it was to prove to the big programs he had his shite together. He's done that, and now LSU and Florida are calling.
