I would support hiring Kermit. Especially if Butch comes with him to recruit. Keep randy and hire a mike sanders type.
I would be on board with this. I value Randy as both a tactician and a talent evaluator. His hire was an immediate coaching upgrade to the current staff. I have no idea if he can recruit though.

Hell yeah...let's just make it a requirement that every head coach at LSU must be from the great state of Louisiana.
Huh?

Randy was the one barking commands from the bench the other night all game. I suspect his D League knowledge to be much of the improvement I've seen in the team between last year and the Houston game?

Improvements to this years team are due to (in no particular order)
-no TQ
- no Ben
- addition of new players combined with maturation of returning players
-addition of Randy Livingston to the staff
The problem with this team as we stand is Johnny Jones is still the HC.
I would honestly much prefer Randy be running the show.

What improvements are we talking about here? They beat 3 bad teams to start the year, then looked like they didn't belong on the same court as VCU and Wichita St., two teams that are good, but probably a notch below some or the other teams they've had in the last few years. I don't think they are really all that "improved" from last year. Houston was a nice win. It helps when you shoot better than 20% from 3, but let's not go bananas just yet.
Right now LSU ranked 102 in offensive efficiency and 95 in defensive efficiency. Last year LSU finished 60/124 in those categories.
Victor finally started and played well. Reath, in the few minutes he wasn't in foul trouble, was effective. Reath is much better than I think many thought he would be. The starting 5 from two nights ago has enough talent to really compete in the SEC. The question is can Jones get them to play well. You can't just decide to play defense only after getting your arse kicked a few times. I don't care if they only score 70 against the next three teams. I want to see LSU really shut those opponents down on the defensive end.

Rick Stansbury, come on down! I think he'd coach circles around Jones and he's really just an average coach I'm sure. MSU fired him after all, but he's still a way better option than Jones in my opinion. He would be one of the more experienced candidates that would have any, ANY interest in the LSU basketball job.

Stansbury had a 55% SEC winning percentage in his 14 seasons at State. Only 3 losing SEC seasons.
State has had 4 losing seasons in a row since he left, and a 25% SEC winning percentage.
State hasn't even had a winning season in the 4 years since he left. Stansbury had 1 year in his 14 where they didn't have a winning record overall.

I'd take Howland over Stans due to his higher ceiling, but I'd take Stans over Jones in a millisecond.
I definitely remember prior to Howland, state fans were lamenting on how they wanted Stans back.
Stans shouldn't be our first choice, but he sure as hell should be top 5

quote:pretty impressive record there! I knew he was solid but wasn't sure what happened that resulted in his leaving MSU.

Stans has wasted talent as well. No thanks.
I would have liked to seen the MSU teams with Bender, Outlaw, Butler (I don't think he would've signed at UT), and Ellis if they all did not leave for the draft.

It's no different than LSU fans reminiscing about Brady now that we've had a coach since who couldn't/wouldn't recruit, and another who doesn't know what to do with great players when he gets them here.
Stansbury was never a bad coach at MSU. However, I lived with a State fan/alum at the end of his tenure. They wanted him gone in much the same way we wanted Brady gone. It was only after their AD hired a complete nobody to replace him that that started to miss Stansbury.
I don't think he should be in LSU's top 5 at all. LSU is no different that Ohio St., Florida, Oklahoma, etc. They can be a football AND basketball power with the right hire. Stansbury doesn't even compare with the two retreads in the league right now, Howland and Barnes. Those guys have Final Fours on their resumes
Bama, MSU, Tenn., Auburn have all made coaching hires in recent years that at least give the appearance they give a shite about basketball. It's time LSU does the same or they are going to get passed up in the SEC quickly, if they aren't already. No one in this year's starting line up is a senior. Just like this season, a new coach who actually knew what in the hell he was doing could come in an start to make some hay immediately. But of course, Alleva waited a year too late (per usual), so he would set up a 08/09 Trent Johnson issue...a good veteran team for one year, followed by a likely rebuild immediately after.
shite, the more I type, the more I realize LSU CAN'T let Alleva hire another basketball coach!!!!

John Brady, in the ten years he was coach during Stansbury's time, had 5 season where his teams had a losing record in the SEC. He had a 45% sec record. Stansbury was 55%.
Brady made the tourney 4 times, with two of those times being the luck of a bunch of really good Baton Rouge kids all deciding to go to LSU and turning out to be a lot better than expected.
Stansbury made the tourney 5 times.
MSU hasn't had a player play in the NBA worth a shite since Eric Dampier was drafted in 96.
LSU had
Stromile SEC POY
Bass SEC POY
Tyrus SEC FOY
Big Baby SEC POY
Thornton SEC POY
They also had Anthony Randolph drafted in the first round. Tasmin is still playing successfully overseas, as is DMitch. Temple wasn't drafted and just got paid in the NBA. Jaime was first team all SEC.
Stansbury did a lot more with a lot less. Let's not compare the two.

To answer the question about Jones' contract, he has two years remaining on it after this season at $1.5m per.
I'd take Stansbury over JJ. Heck, I'd take a cigar store indian over JJ. But I think we could do better than Stansbury if we were willing to spend a little more money. That's a huge if, though.

We have a coach....
If Johnny did get fired, I wouldn't be against it. My brother played for Stansbury at State and he is a very good coach. He's a big time cheater though.

I'd take stansbury. I actually really want this. He goes to tamu as an assistant and they get better. He leads msu to probably their best stretch ever. He isn't championship material but dammit we would he good under him. Especially if we can lock down the talent around here. shite

If Stansbury comes here, does the #6 recruit in the country come with him?
I'm down.
