Anyone else find the Brent Venables hire to be very underwhelming for OU?

This hire wreaks of Will Muschamp. He’s a career coordinator who definitely has more of a coordinator personality than a head coach personality. I expect him to flame out eventually due to inconsistency from his football teams.
Just my opinion. OU should have hired a proven head coach.

Yeah but the Lebby hire was good

Honestly, I agree with you, but what proven head coach was truly available that actually would’ve wanted to go to OU?
Cristobal wasn’t going there.
Kiffin wasn’t going there.
We took Brian Kelly off the market.
I can honestly think of not one proven head coach that was available to them that would’ve realistically gone there.

It’ll be interesting to see if it works out. I think they’ll have a hell of an offense with Lebby and Venables can definitely lead a defense.

Maybe.. But a once failed HC, then defensive line coach, head coach won a Natty for us.. So who really knows.

Not really
This wasn’t his first opportunity, just the first one he accepted.
I think he knows exactly what he wants to do and how to run a program. Can he execute that plan will remain to be seen.
No different than Sam Pittman and he was never a coordinator. Position coach and associate HC and has done an admirable job so far at Arky.
Venables had long tenures as DC and AHC under two very successful HC’s, Stoops and Swinney.
He is as ready as anyone. I think it is a pretty solid hire. Not flashy but very solid.

I really haven't thought about it much

I honestly don't see why either party would say no, but hey that's just me. Guess they did the next best thing and took his OC instead.
I honestly don't think the hire is that bad, I think OU knows they need to step up their defensive side of the ball going into the SEC and poached a well regarded DC who has familiarity with the program and has been part of multiple NC teams and has been under multiple NC winning coaches. It might not work out, he is after all a 50 year old first time HC so there's risks associated with that, but I can definitely see the logic behind it and how it could work. I really do think Venables had a lot to do with Clemson's ascent, they had given up 70 points in their last bowl game before he got there, then next year they beat LSU and they've been going up from there as he's been there basically a decade now. They certainly could have done worse.

Like it , Now Dabo feels the pain of changing coordinators.

Bob Stoops is basically running the football program.

OU always hires coordinators and it’s worked out for them…Stoops, Riley, Switzerland, etc.

Coaches making moves to inferior programs don't typically work out.
Florida stayed in their wheelhouse and got an up and comer. Good for them (maybe).

Florida knew their role, hence the hire of a bargain bin Sun Belt guy

Maybe to you and the rest of the board who is fixated on the proven Coach. Oklahoma has a long history of success of hiring coordinators as coaches: Switzer, Stoops, and Riley all did pretty well there as coordinator hires.
LSU fans’ obsession with proven coaches is ridiculous and truly limits the talent pool we’re willing to consider.
What does Ryan Day, Dabo Sweeney, and Kirby Smart have in common?
