I think it’s more like the Kirby smart hire. He had plenty of chances but was looking for the right timing/situation. Coaches are getting smarter about that and not jumping on the first opportunity, but looking for the best chance to succeed. I’ve always assumed Venables was the real brains over at Clemson

Dabo in reality should be selling cars at Upstate Ford. Venables was the man behind the curtain.

Three coaches that will watch CBK hoist up a Crystal Ball before any of them do?!?

I think paired with Lebby on one side the ball and Venables on other it’ll be a good pairing. Just will have to wait and see how Venables runs a program which he’s never done. Def not bad for those 2 coaches coaching each side the ball. Pretty solid to be honest. Venables makes them respectable on defense and they might have something.

OU has had success hiring coordinators, in the Lil 12. Let’s see how that works out in the SEC.

I agree that Venables is underwhelming, only Bc the guy never wanted to be a HC until now at least.

No. Venables hasn't ridden any coattails to get to where he is. He's legit one of the best.

I talked to some OU fans at the Amarillo Airport. They weren’t overly excited

I disagree. OU has everything they need coaching wise. But they still have to find a way to sign those big 5 star defensive players to OU.

I think it was a good hire especially with Riley leaving on such short notice. I would have considered Aranda, Fickel, etc but Venables is highly competent.

I never was that crazy about LR so think it has the potential to be an upgrade. I stress potential because Venebles has never been a HC.

The fact that he took so long to become a HC is a bit concerning, but that's literally my only concern. I think they'll recruit well and the OC hire appears to be solid. If I'm hiring a first time HC I don't see how you could do much better than BV.

Yeah because hiring a coordinator hasn’t worked in the SEC.

They will be better in the SEC because of the Venables/Lebby combination than they would have been with Riley. Their D will excellent and their offense just as dangerous.

Kiffin wasn’t going there.

Kiffin would have built his own Sooner Schooner and driven it from Oxford to Norman to get that job.

Keep telling yourself that, dumbass. Beating LSU once every five years was bad enough, just wait. Talking about a coach that nobody else wanted, Pittman is about to get owned.

If you read their 247 board they were delusional enough to think they were getting a Dabo/BV package deal at one point.

OU should have hired a proven head coach.

Traditionally, they don't do that. And with Blake, Bob and Lincoln, it turned out pretty good for them.

I live in OU country and I hate them with the burning fire of tem million supernovas, but I actually think Venables is a damn solid hire for them. The hire means they'll actually bring a defense into the SEC, and that's something they'd never have gotten with Riley.

My $.02.
