Brad Lambert - Marshall - 3rd in total defense this year - Broyles Award finalist
Kurt Mattix - San Diego State - 4th in total defense this year.
Ilaisa Tuiaki - BYU - 9th in total defense this year.
All ranked ahead of Freeman's defense at Cincy.

Chris Ash - Texas
Runs 4-2-5 and did a decent job in his first year there. No one on here seems interested in him but I like him over most candidates mentioned. He also seems more plausible than landing Leonhard or Odom. Sark may retain him but it doesn't seem like a given he will.

I was wondering about Chris Ash, too. Why not begin the process with a half dozen guys and Ash and Nielsen be two of the 6? Steele wouldn't be a bad pick as a stop-gap (he'd be 6 of 6).

They had a good defense this season. He and Reaves at UAB abound definitely be considered.
