ESPN updated its 2020 Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings on Wednesday and pegged LSU down at No. 8.
quote:

No. 8 LSU

2019 record: 15-0, 8-0 SEC

Returning starters: three offense, five defense, two special teams

Key losses: QB Joe Burrow, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, WR Justin Jefferson, TE Thaddeus Moss, C Lloyd Cushenberry III, LB K'Lavon Chaisson, LB Jacob Phillips, LB Patrick Queen, S Grant Delpit.

Outlook: The paint was barely dry on LSU's dream season before a mass exodus began. A whopping nine underclassmen, including leading rusher Edwards-Helaire, top pass-catcher Jefferson and leading tackler Phillips, left early for the NFL draft. Passing game coordinator Joe Brady, who helped Burrow win the Heisman Trophy, left to become the Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator. Baylor hired defensive coordinator Dave Aranda as its new head coach. There's no question coach Ed Orgeron faces a monumental rebuilding job, but the Tigers are hardly a one-hit wonder. Orgeron lured Youngstown State coach Bo Pelini back to LSU as defensive coordinator, and longtime NFL coach Scott Linehan will help Steve Ensminger run the offense in 2020. Myles Brennan, who attempted 40 passes in 2019, is the favorite to replace Burrow. At least he'll have Biletnikoff Award winner Ja'Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall Jr. to throw to.
Top 10:
1. Clemson
2. Ohio State
3. Alabama
4. Georgia
5. Penn State
6. Oregon
7. Florida
8. LSU
9. Oklahoma
10. Notre Dame

Do a ranking of best teams of the last 150 years. Guess who is number 1 on that list?

Nebraska 95?

Should we be higher? Nope. You lost the greatest QB in school history-one of the greates in CFB history. Lost a ton of key pieces on both sides of the ball. So I would say 8 is right.

Ohio State, Bama, and Clemson routinely lose the same amount of talent each year yet remain in the top 4 every year. Same with Georgia. Simply on recruiting and talent they know is coming back, we should be 4th imo. It’s a preseason ranking. It doesn’t have to be perfect or accurate. It’s simply stating that this team beat the crap out of everyone last year and has been reloading that talent every year in recruiting so they deserve to be ahead of GA who they beat the last two years. Clemson will bring back some talent as will Ohio State but Bama also lost a very talented QB and many more studs, yet here they are at #3. LSU has earned that respect as well imo. We’ve been pretty damn consistent and have been loading up at QB, OL, DL and LB. LSU is going to be very good next year. We might lose a few games because of so much change but we also have the talent to be special again if the cards fall right. We deserve that benefit of doubt imo. LSU is one of the elite programs, who’s better?

the fact that ESPN continues to rank Oklahoma in the top 10 is laughable and proves they don't deserve respect from anyone

I'd add ND to that as well

I don't know of anyone that belongs above Oklahoma, but I am really tired of them trying to prop up Penn State in an effort to make sure the Big 10 has a little validity. I cant believe they don't have Mich in the top 10 for the same reason.

When is the last time they finished outside the top 10?

Honestly, we have so many question marks that #8 is generous right now. I won't be surprised at anything between 8-4 and 15-0.

Truly. We're a shell of our former selves. It doesn't matter who it is...you lose than many people, both players and coaches, it'll show at some level.

Honestly, 4-8 are all a toss up. And OU anywhere near the top is laughable - they're fools gold.
user avatar
denvertiger51 months
Yeah, but they play in the Big 12 so 10-11 wins is almost an afterthought for that program

Doesn't matter... If we take care of business we will be where we want to be.

All of these way to early rankings dont amount to squat. LSU wasnt supposed to be good last season. And they went 15-0 and won the Natty. Everyone needs to relax and lets see what Brennan and company can do. Personally Im thinking you will all be pleasantly surprised and happy with our 2020 team. Have faith. But then again this is LSU fans who think the sky is always falling

This is ridiculous. A ton of talent returns so this is an insult to have the defending Champs outside of the top 5

Actually we return 8 starters out of 22. So...

Well I know for a fact we are going to be better than Georgia and Florida so there’s my .02.

There are ZERO facts you can provide at this moment to make this claim.

Probably should be higher. But, we are not Alabama who gets benefit of the doubt all the time. And really how good is Clemson? We know they have talent but they do not play anyone till CFP. For instance UK Basketball is very good every year and they lose but the actually play other good teams during the year. Clemson does not.

They call it "Way to Early" for a reason. Only thing it does is rile up a bunch of guys posting BS.

My early prediction is LSU wins the west and loses to UF and goes 11-1 in the regular season. LSU then beats UF in the SEC Championship Game for a 2 seed in the Playoffs where they go to play OSU in the natty for a repeat national championship. All led by Brennan at QB.

I'd definitely take that.

If the Tigers are undefeated on 11/8 no one on this list will be ahead of them. All we have to do is just win!
user avatar
Lsutigerturner51 months
Hmm so your saying LSU has to go undefeated till 11-8 and at that point LSU will be 9-0, & 5-0 in SEC play with wins over #3 Alabama, #7 Florida, #23 Texas we will then be good to be rated #1?? Damn that doesn't sound hard... While Clemson can be ranked #1 through 11-7 without any top 25 wins... Makes sense

frick the ESPN haters, I absolutely hate ESPN media members for the most part. Namely Bob Wischusen, Brock Huard and Allison Williams. Hope I have the opportunity to talk to them one day and tell them how completely unprofessional and close minded they are

LSU should be ahead of Georgia, Penn State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and possibly Florida. We should be #4 or #5 on that list. What a joke.
