Report: Ole Miss Is Considering Legal Action For Buyout Payments From Two LSU Players

Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter recently spoke with the Clarion Ledger and said that the University is considering legal action to collect buyout payments from two former players who transferred to LSU.

Those players are Princewill Umanmielen and Devin Harper.

quote:

In an interview with the Clarion Ledger that covered a variety of topics, Carter said July 10 that going to court is one of the avenues Ole Miss is considering to make sure the buyouts are paid.

"That would be an option, going and asking a court to get that money for you," Carter said. "Contracts are with the players. LSU could pay that on behalf of the players. So we're kind of exploring all of that right now."

...

Carter said there has been general hesitancy among college football athletic departments to enforce buyout payments against 18-year-olds. Because the Umanmielen and Harper deals were broken shortly after they were signed, Ole Miss feels collecting is the right move.

"Those are the kind that, having signed a brand-new rev share contract basically a week or two before wanting to leave, those are the kind that put you in a bind, especially there in the portal cycle," Carter said. "Those two we're going to continue to figure out how to collect. We feel like based on the contract we deserve to collect."
Ole Miss and LSU meet on the field this season in Week 3 in Oxford. "Spot the ball."

Ole Miss is the “super bitch ex-wife” who refuses to move on with her life and is hell bent on making everyone as miserable as she is.

They took the money - and likely signed paperwork obligating them to services to the university - and did not uphold the agreement. What's the issue here? Any fiduciary - Lane included - would pursue this.

hellz yeah. AD's need to ban together on this particular issue. Next thing you know they are doing it mid season. Nobody is stopping them and there will always be a Texas Tech that will pay you $1MM for 3 games.

If they do it mid season they won’t be playing. You’re not the brightest bulb I see

Agree completely…athletes need to start being held accountable. Welcome to adulthood. All schools need to do this.

The contracts are with the individual players and don’t have anything to do with LSU.
user avatar
so are contracts with coaches, but the new school they move to typically pay those for the coach

I don't think anyone is mad Ole Miss wants their money due to a contract -- they should, it's a contract. It's how they do things that's the issue here. Why make that a public statement other than being scorned and mad? It makes them seem so small. Just go directly to LSU behind the scenes and ask them to pay for the players. They'd be more than happy to do it. The money is not that much.

Is this the same Ole Miss that stole the LB from Clemson by text offering the LBer a milly?

They signed a contract and broke it, case close. I don't agree with LSU paying the buyout, but the players should be held accountable. LSU fans would be crying if it was the other way around.
user avatar
Then why make it a public statement other than try to hurt LSU? All they have to do is keep it quiet and ask LSU to pay for their small buyout. It's not that big of a deal for LSU.

Ole Miss continues to act like a sore loser with anything related to Kiffin's departure to LSU.

I know CFB has changed... NIL and the transfer rule, but one thing will always remain in CFB... the pettiness. The first thing that comes to mind and it was in the 30 for 30 about SMU.. Someone from TA&M bought Eric Dickerson a brand new trans am. He never said he was committing to them, in fact I think he said at that point he was pretty sure he was going to SMU, but he was telling other schools he was considering a few schools and will make his decision and let everyone know.. All of a sudden a new trans am shows up at his house and he is given the keys. Some guy from TA&M told him it was from friends of Texas A&M. Dickerson said he drove it around. He said he pulled up to school and everyone was looking to see who was driving that new trans am. Girls would ask for a ride home.. He said he did it knowing he wasn't going to TA&M, he never mislead them to make them think he was considering them more than anyone else and when he announced he was going to SMU.. The next day he drove the car to school.. At the end of the day that car was no where to be found. I think he said someone saw a tow truck in the parking lot.. But that's what I love about CFB. The passion.

Also, didn't they take a running back from LSU a couple years ago? Does LSU get buy out for that?
