Multiple sources are reporting that LSU tight end coach Steve Ensminger is expected to be elevated to offensive coordinator on a full-time basis to replace Matt Canada.

LSU has not confirmed the news but both The Advocate and NOLA.com are reporting that the decision is expected to be completed in the coming days.

Both websites also report that current LSU consultant and longtime NFL receivers coach Jerry Sullivan will be hired for a full-time position on the staff and will work alongside Ensminger. Sulivan's title will likely be passing game coordinator. Per The Advocate:
quote:

Ed Orgeron plans to hire the former LSU quarterback and longtime assistant as his offensive coordinator, barring any last-minute snags, multiple sources confirmed Monday night to The Advocate. The move is not yet final but is expected to be completed in the coming days.

LSU officials reached Monday could not confirm the report.

Ensminger is expected to work alongside LSU consultant and longtime NFL receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, who is expected to be given a significant role in the offense. Sullivan's exact title is unclear, but he is likely to have a heavy hand in the Tigers' passing game.
Ensminger, 59, served as interim offensive coordinator for eight games in 2016, taking over the offense after Les Miles and Cam Cameron were fired just four games into the season.

He went 6-2 during that span, averaging 41 points in the wins but produced just 10 total points in the two losses to Alabama and Florida.

Sullivan, 73, joined LSU's support staff last August, working with wide receiver coach Mickey Joseph in an off-the-field role helping with game-planning and film study.

He was LSU's wide receiver coach from 1984-1990 and coached wideouts in the NFL for over 20 years with several teams.

Georgia is in the title game, Bama wins the title for the 5th time in 9 years, and LSU (AGAIN) hire from within, hiring the God damn TE coach who doesn't even want the job. LSU begging him to be OC even though he is the 50th best option. I am so fricking speechless.

Doesn’t seem like you’re speechless.....

Do you not understand Ensminger has been a coordinator at Clemson, UGA, and A&M? He is very qualified and is very respected in the coaching community.

Why did LSU spend so much money on Canada only to fire him, pay him more on a buyout, and then hire someone who was there the whole time??? This is incompetence on steroids!

They had all the right intentions. It didn't work out. Things happen. Don't you understand?

Because Canada is toxic and couldn't get along with most of tge staff.

Because defensive line coaches telling offensive coaches what to do has always worked out!

Nothing against Emsminger, but really disappointing we didn’t get a new creative OC.

Maybe Ensminger will be the only one with enough sense to decide to turn this down? I have given up hope on anybody else.

I am willing to bet he tried and tried again. I wouldn't doubt if they mentioned "dismissal" if he didn't take it; or, threatened his retirement or something like that. It happens all the time out here in the rest-of-the-world. Happened to me two jobs ago.
user avatar
schwartzy100 months
What bothers me is that Ensminger publicly said he didn't want the job after the 2016 season and that he was just doing it to help in the short term. Why is he and the entire board of supervisors okay with this?

Hire Freeze or Briles before they are gone, but nah, that would make too much sense. I'm not looking forward to next season at all anymore.

way to mail it in LSU...the Curly Hallman era is about to begin again. When all you want to do as a program is turn a profit, these are the types of hires you make.

Herman and Fisher are looking a lot better now that we see CEO's true colors. That BS about hiring the best coordinators and failing to do so without a proper search is for the birds.

Herman had no interest in coming here. He was just using LSU for leverage against Texas. Fisher would have come if the alumni wouldn’t have leaked everything to the media and made a circus of everything. But he would have to renegotiate his contract every year for more money or he would be gone.
user avatar

So we break the bank for Aranda, but follow that up by hiring fricking Ensminger no offense to Ensminger but if he loved LSU he would do the right thing and graciously decline the position.
user avatar
Neauxla_Tiger100 months
Apparently he did decline, but we hired him anyway... Now that inspires confidence!
