re: New coach - timing

Posted by theSaltwaterGuide on 11/12/25 at 7:06 am to
I don't get these questions! It is widely reported LSU is interested in Lane Kiffin. My 3 year old knows this! He is still coaching so if you're serious about going after him it's gonna be a minute.
You do realize these guys have to want to coach in college.
I agree. We have all probably dove into learning about a lot of these coaches and he impresses me the most. Auburn OC then to Oregon as OC where Bo Nix followed him. Young, passionate and fiery HC. I would think at some point he will leave Arizona State and whoever gets him will be getting a good one.

LSU has a GM that handles all of that. Dabo needs a place that has a GM that will handle all of that kind of stuff which would allow him to just coach.
Schools with more invested will pay his assistants more. It is one of the not so often mentioned benefits of big time programs.

I think the presence of Austin Thomas could play a huge role in this or any coach coming. He can handle the NIL and Transfer portal side of everything.
My bad I was looking at a bunch of numbers and got them wrong. Point still the same though. It's all about hiring the right fit. Not the one who is the hottest this season.
Les Miles record at OkieSt was 28-21 before he accepted the LSU job

Nick Saban record at MichSt was 34-24-1 before he accepted the LSU job.

It doesn't have to be a guy who is going 9-3 or 10-2 every year. They just have to have certain characteristics that the department is looking for in a coach.

Edited for fix LM record
I think that what they are saying is that some schools who are traditional not great have already figured out the NIL/transfer portal issue and have a good HC. We have not! That could change though and they are leaving that part out.
I like our chances of landing a good coach. May not be Lane but I think there is a decent pool of coaches (some at their Alma maters) that should be able to see what LSU can offer. I also think having an LSU all conference LB as an up and coming DC in the NFL at least makes it to where we have a high floor on a coach hire. Sheppard shouldn't be the first call but if we do get turned down I could think of a lot of worse hires than bringing him in.

You are correct... named interim earlier this week. Little shot of him being permanent HC.

re: How about Saban as AD?

I been saying this for sometime. He had a pretty meaningful relationship with Skip when Skip transitioned from coach to AD. It's a way for Saban to be involved in sports and not on the sideline. He still wanting to have an impact.
Most of the time big name coaches don't leave success. Most of it time schools hire someone that has shown potential at a lesser school. Les at OkieSt and Saban at MichSt. Both had shown promise at those schools. Would be equivalent to like Kenny Dillingham. Has shown some promise and a team with 10x the resources should scoop him up.

What's with the Lane infatuation?

I think it's more about having an offensive HC that is also the play caller. When was the last time we had that?

Brian Hartline is at the top of Penn States list from what everyone has been saying.
Saban wasn't a big name when he was at MichSt., Miles wasn't a big name when he was at OkieSt. And Orgeron for sure wasn't a big name. To be honest Brian Kelly was probably the biggest name LSU has hired for HC and that dint work out too well.
This is the only thing that gives me hope... everyday that passes and we don't hear words of extensions from any of these coaches means there is a chance.
