Mike Gundy Says Oklahoma State Would Have Beat LSU In The 2011 National Championship

During an interview with ESPN's Chris Low, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy remembered back to the 2011 season where a loss to Iowa State on Nov. 18 cost the Cowboys a chance at playing LSU for the National Championship.

Oklahoma State was No. 2 at the time and lost 37-31 in double overtime to unranked Iowa State. The loss allowed Alabama to jump ahead of the Cowboys in the BCS standings, setting up the rematch between LSU and the Crimson Tide in the National Championship.

According to his interview with Low, Gundy said that his team would have beat LSU in the National Championship if they got there.

There was a time when that 2011 season tormented Gundy, especially with Oklahoma State being passed up by Alabama in the final BCS standings. The Crimson Tide went on to play LSU in a rematch after losing the regular-season contest and captured the national championship.

"We would have played LSU and won," Gundy said. "They were an overload-the-box, man-to-man team on defense, and you could not play our team in man that year. We were too good. That still bothers me, that we didn't get a shot. And if the system was set up like it is now, we would have been in the playoff. I guess those things don't drive me as much. I love for our kids to have success, don't get me wrong. But I don't dwell on it like I used to."

Yep just like the Cowboys beat Iowa State, LOL! If Gundy honestly believes the Cowboys would of beat the Tigers he needs to be drug tested for sure.

He thinks LSU couldn't have covered their receivers in man coverage? Mo Claiborne, Honey Badger, Tharold Simon, Ron Brooks. They could try to spread LSU out all they wanted and we still had an NFL caliber CB on every one of their receivers. Justin Blackmon would've been a tough matchup, but I don't think Weeden would've had much time to get the ball to him

If I remember correctly LSU and Bama started at least 22 players in that Championship game that were drafted by the end of their college careers. Largest contingent of future NFL players in the same college game of all time. No way Okie State comes close. Just too much talent. Our loss to Bama was on the coaches and their game plan or lack of a new one to play Bama a second time.

Sorry Mullet,but the main reason that Alabama got in over Oklahoma State. Was because,eveybody thought that LSU was going to have an easy victory, against anybody else, in the Louisiana SuperDome. This scenario was constantly talked about. And they wasn't having that,at all.

That's easy to say when there is no actual way to prove it.. But even trying to be aware of my bias, I am convinced the only team that was able to beat the 2011 team, was the team who did beat us.. And needed to play us twice in order to do so.

If Oklahoma State had not been upset by Iowa State, we would have got to play them in the National Championship, won by at least 17 and went on to being named one of the GREATEST college football teams of all time.
