During an interview with ESPN's Chris Low, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy remembered back to the 2011 season where a loss to Iowa State on Nov. 18 cost the Cowboys a chance at playing LSU for the National Championship.

Oklahoma State was No. 2 at the time and lost 37-31 in double overtime to unranked Iowa State. The loss allowed Alabama to jump ahead of the Cowboys in the BCS standings, setting up the rematch between LSU and the Crimson Tide in the National Championship.

According to his interview with Low, Gundy said that his team would have beat LSU in the National Championship if they got there.
quote:

There was a time when that 2011 season tormented Gundy, especially with Oklahoma State being passed up by Alabama in the final BCS standings. The Crimson Tide went on to play LSU in a rematch after losing the regular-season contest and captured the national championship.

"We would have played LSU and won," Gundy said. "They were an overload-the-box, man-to-man team on defense, and you could not play our team in man that year. We were too good. That still bothers me, that we didn't get a shot. And if the system was set up like it is now, we would have been in the playoff. I guess those things don't drive me as much. I love for our kids to have success, don't get me wrong. But I don't dwell on it like I used to."
Um, thoughts?

Not a chance. 2011 LSU and 2011 Alabama were NFL teams Nobody even came close to beating either team outside of their 2 games against each other

He is out of his mind. LSU’s defense that year would have shut down their offense.

Jordan Jefferson would look like Michael Vick in that game

If Oklahoma State had not been upset by Iowa State, we would have got to play them in the National Championship, won by at least 17 and went on to being named one of the GREATEST college football teams of all time.

A team that loses to Iowa St. shouldn't be talking about winning a national title.

Ok State had negative defense that year. They actually made it easier to score by putting players on the field. And we had a top 5 all time defense to counter their offense. It would have been a railroading.

But Gundy gets point for rocking the mullet.

I have a feeling all 6 NFL DBs on that roster would have held Justin DWI Blackmon in check. We beat EVERY OTHER BCS bowl champ in that season. Lol Gundy.

The only team on the planet that could beat LSU that year was Alabama. 2011 OSU can eat a dick.

Les would probably still be our coach if we played them but I don’t blame him for being high on his team they were pretty good that year

LSU played like they were hungover in that game. Pretty sure ULL would have beaten LSU that day.

I mean he's dead wrong but what's he supposed to say?

That's easy to say when there is no actual way to prove it.. But even trying to be aware of my bias, I am convinced the only team that was able to beat the 2011 team, was the team who did beat us.. And needed to play us twice in order to do so.
