Multiple sources reported Thursday afternoon that the College Football Playoff is inching closer to a 14-team playoff model that would begin in 2026. Per ESPN:

Multiple sources told ESPN on Thursday that each league and Notre Dame are expected to sign a legal agreement by midday on Friday. Starting in 2026, the new agreement will codify the further financial separation of the expanded Big Ten and SEC from everyone else in college athletics. The Group of 5 commissioners have been in a difficult position without any negotiating power, but sources indicate they won't choose being excluded from the CFP.

"It's like the Godfather's offer you can't refuse," one Group of 5 athletic director told ESPN on Thursday.

The financial distribution for the expected 14-team playoff will look radically different that its playoff predecessor. On an annual basis, for example, the Big Ten and SEC will be making more than $21 million per school, a number that's up from the nearly $5.5 million the Power Five leagues are currently being paid.

In the ACC, the schools will get more than $13 million annually and the Big 12 will get more than $12 million per school. Notre Dame is expected to get more than $12 million as well, and sources tell ESPN there will be a financial incentive for any independent team that reaches the CFP. (There will no longer be a participation bonus for any of the other leagues -- a detail that was frustrating to some leaders in the Group of 5.)

Evey decision is plagued with unintended consequences. This too will bring results no one expected and it will NOT be for the better.

Meaningless season, meaningless conference championship.

Yea, good move since the 12 team playoff was obviously a disaster.

Everybody is missing the gorilla inn the article- participants from the Big and SEC get 21 MILLION for making the playoffs- that’s real $$$$$$$ and will only help LSU maintain and build great teams- allowing more $$$ for other sports like Wbb, baseball, softball, basketball and gymnastics- this. Is the SEC/BIG swinging their big Johnson around and demanding more because of who we are- all good!!!

College Football is dead, at least as it once was. This is what happens when players can be bought and paid for. It’s not college football anymore, its nothing more than players getting paid to play for a mascot, simple as that. NIL and legalized gambling were the death kneel to College Athletics as we once knew them.

Can't wait to see more 56-7 blowouts in the early round games.

You won't. The top 2 get byes. That means once the back 12 play against each other, you'll have the #8 team vs the #1 team. IMO, if the #3 team gets upset by the #14 team, that #14 (now #8 after winning), at least has a chance against the #1 team. Last year LSU would have gotten in at #14 IIRC. That means if LSU beat Bama in a rematch, they are definitely good enough to make the championship game. People still forget that some teams only have as many losses as the do due to having way tougher schedules. The first two rounds will knock pretenders out early. IMO, if you were good enough at the back end to beat two top 5 teams (#13 vs #4 then #13 vs possibly #1/#2 or #3/#5 in the 2nd round), then you're more than deserving of playing for the championship. LSU would get a legitimate shot even with a tough schedule.

Downvote. I wish this expansion would stop. 12 is enough.

Before long they’ll be lobbying for as many teams as the NCAA basketball tournament. We will be seeing teams like Akron, Kent St., Utah St. in the playoffs lol

So stupid. There’s zero need for more than four. I’d be fine going back to BCS really.

The conferences just need to move on without Notre Dame.

Why 14? It should be 12 or 16.

WTF man, if the 12 team model hasn’t even taken place what actual adjustments would actually be necessary to get this to a 14 team playoff next year then?
Just do it and stop fricking around.
Silly

I have no idea because I haven’t followed this or researched it but my guess is it is the SEC and Big Ten telling the other conferences “okay, we’ll give you more potential spots but you have to pay us mo’ money!”
