Did he analyze the success percentage of winning the game in overtime?

Right, the 2 things to weigh are “Winning in OT when ___” AND “making the PAT” vs 2pt. Pretty sure getting to OT isn’t the goal

You should throw odds out of the window when Fl State’s entire sideline melted down after the fumble. Add a 99 yard drive w a favorable ref call on top of that and that was LSU’s game to win right then and there.

LSU had their boots on FL, St. necks after the 99 yard TD.

I won’t even argue that the call was right or wrong. Just don’t blow smoke up my arse and tell me “acktually, 96%….”. He either thinks we’re idiots or worse, he’s one

We beat the odds

This is one of the few things that I dont fault the staff for. Polian isnt an ideal coach and CBK needs to address this, but you take the points when you have the momentum. I agreed with attempting the PAT
user avatar

Polian is a helluva recruiter and so you have to keep him. Just find a special teams guy.

There were a couple of ND lurkers on tRant the past few weeks who did specifically mention how BAD Polian’s Spcl Teams units were @ ND. Now I know there were a bunch of whiney & butt hurt ND lurkers bashing basically everything about BK, his ND Teams & Staff so that’s probably just more of the same BS but not difficult to verify I suppose.

Settle down. Kelly knows what he is doing.

96%? Lol, the follow up shoulda been “what’s the percentage when you’ve already missed one, you’re breaking in a new kicker & your TE doesn’t put a hand on anybody coming off the edge”. Kicking may have been the right call, but it sure as shite ain’t because of analytics. The 47% is prolly wrong too. With the momentum & Daniels’ legs, odds are better than that

If we cant block for an XP why would you assume we would be able to block them on a 2pt try?
user avatar
Jacherse32 months
If you can't make PATs your odds of winning in OT drop exponentially.

Thats always a lose/lose for a Head Coach. Kelly would be taking a MUCH worse beating by the National Media & LSU Fans had he went for 2 & failed. U fans I'm speaking of know who you are & also KNOW I'm correct in my assumptions.

Not me. I would have loved for him to try to win the game there.

you're wrong and everybody knows it. Us fans know what you're saying and the point is the 2 point conversion would win a game that we were never in from the start.

LOL this argument is ridiculous. Kelly's 1,000% right. Just go ask John Harbaugh, who's Ravens missed the playoffs by like 1 game and who went for 2 TWICE instead of kicking the extra point to tie, how those decisions worked out for him and his team.

The ONLY time to go for 2 in a similar situation is if you're overwhelmingly better than the defense or if you know your team can't play another down of football. Numbers don't lie.

I more interested in the probability of having 2 blocked kicks in a single game. He made the right call, without a doubt, it just didn't work out this time.
user avatar
wesman2132 months
He made the right choice, but the ultimate fact that I've heard is that BK brought one coach with him from ND and it was the special teamer!
user avatar

Well, I would have gone for 2. He had the momentum. Lose it in regulation OR OT, what's the difference?

I'd feel more comfortable if Kelly was wearing some white New Balance shoes.

It was odd seeing the purple paired with the charcoal pants for all the coaches

1984 Orange Bowl -- Nebraska, by kicking the extra point, would have tied the game, and kept the national championship ranking. This was before overtimes in college ball.

Nebraska went for two to win the game instead of the tie. Didn't make it. It's been second-guessed for 35 years.

I see your point that am extra point makes sense in some situations. But to Miami-Nebraska game, people forget that even if the Huskers made the extra point to tie the game, Miami still had 2 timeouts and 48 seconds. With the way Kosar carved up the Husker defense that night, most people would give Miami a great chance to win the game anyways.

Poor kicking game??? No, NO KICKING GAME!!!

If that is the case, he should be basically indifferent statistically. .94 expected points vs. .96. I think the 96% could be overestimated though given how bad our ST were.
user avatar
cwil17732 months
I did not think we would win in extra time.
user avatar

Ok so making the pat was apparently 97% but what was the chances to both make the pat and win the overtime battle. I’ll tell you it was much less than 47% for that game. These guys make way too much money.

What he seems to be saying is never go for 2. Wish we had tried it, this loss is hard to take.
