A bright spot on LSU's defense through the first part of the season has been the play of freshman linebacker Harold Perkins.

The five-star defender has made an immediate impact with 26 total tackles, ten quarterback pressures, 1.5 sacks, and one interception.

However, his presence on Saturday's 40-13 loss to Tennessee, was obviously missing as Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Matt House went with more nickel packages which left Perkins sidelined most of the game.
quote:

"As you guys know, we moved him to SAM linebacker, Kelly said. "Last week was not a position where -- and you know the game. The game was a spread game. You've got two receivers that are out on the numbers."

"Harold would have had to be standing out on the numbers playing the game as the SAM. We nickeled out, so we were in a nickel situation."

"We would have had to change his position back to inside linebacker for that game. We weren't going to do that."

"This is a game that suits him really well. You'll see a lot of Harold Perkins this weekend."

Imagine "The Honey Badger" being benched because he did not fit a scheme. You get your playmakers on the field.

This! I’m a CBK fan but he made no sense on this one.

You don’t keep Perkins off the damn field under any circumstances. I can’t agree with CBK here.

Whatever we were in, it didn’t work.

No kidding, we apparently never thought about even trying to get some Perkins blitzes.

Thank god Dave Aranda didn't do that shite with Devin White.

That LB didn't play much because he was told to sit out. For whatever reason didn't make any sense. I hope he isn't becoming the like of Fisher with quarterback that could never pan out.

That's a dumb answer. You find a spot that he can play. You tailor what you do to your best players, not the other way around.

From how many years of coaching experience have you learned this?
user avatar
How about he plays the kinda linebacker that is on the field in all situations.

So, he’s been effective where he was at, but we moved him to another position/scheme that given Tennessee’s personnel, he probably wasn’t going to be on the field as much….All this resulted in LSU giving up the most points of the season because our stud Fresh LB wasn’t On the field as much.… I understand now why he says we need to coach better! No shite Coach Kelly!

Josh Pate agrees

I like Josh Pate, but he's not exactly a football guru who studies the film.

Well daniels is improving... Not enough. But he clearly is.

He’s been a disrupting force as a freshman, and the coaches outsmarted themselves with this stupid decision.

All week long I'd been saying that #40's got to be Hooker's shadow. Wow...are we on different pages.

That's pretty stupid. Sit your best linebacker because he doesn't fit scheme. I've never seen Saban do that.

What about Fisher? He might do it. :)

Even Dave Aranda understood that you leave your athletes on the field. Duke Riley is one of many examples
user avatar

Devin White was the best example. Devin didn't know the playbook at all his freshman year and was behind because of the RB thing. But Aranda knew you couldn't leave that weapon on the bench.

It would be irresponsible to not play your best guys.

This was a shitty answer. Put your best 11 on field. Figure it out. For $10m a year, I’ll figure it out. Perkins needs to be on field.

100% agree with this. You have GOT to have him on the field against the #8 ranked team. You’ve got to have your most talented guys on the field.
user avatar
LSU_Legz43 months
Ok, I'll play. If you're best 11 are all DB and LB, what do you field on a 2nd and goal from the 1? If your best 11 are all DL and LB, who do you field against 5 wide spread? The reason you aren't making 10mil is because your coaching expertise isn't worth shite.

So he puts Perkins out on the numbers with a wide receiver and he gets burnt every time, thats what you want us to do? Then we would have lost by more. Theres a reason BK is the coach and not any of the stupid people on this site.

It's bad coaching if your scheme doesn't include #40. But you don't have to take my word for it. Ball don't lie and they dropped a 40 spot in Death Valley

Maybe the true freshman doesn't know the inside position yet since he's not an inside LB.

Bro we got beat 40-13 and we didn't play our best defensive guy. What X's and O's sense does that make cheif?

Idk maybe he's a true freshman who's only played against inferior competition and doesn't know how to play ILB against the #1 offense in America???
user avatar
davidlsu43 months
Well didn't look like any of the LB knew how to play ILB against tenn so i don't see what the issue was trying, we needed to put pressure on him and we didnt

Between the read option, using a TE as KR and PR, keeping the best defensive player off the field, preseason All-American WR with 1 TD ... midway through the season Brian Kelly looks like a coach who doesn't utilize talent. ACC analytics won't win SEC championships.

I agree woth everyone else. This is a lame explanation. Change him to Rover, just get him on the field.
user avatar
blueboxer111943 months
Uhhhh. He's a defensive playmaker.

You find a way to get him on the field.

Is this peewee?
