John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports
Former LSU star and current ESPN analyst Booger McFarland was on The Paul Finebaum Show recently and ranked his top four coaches in the SEC.

Mcfarland had Nick Saban at the top of his list followed by Kirby Smart, Ed Orgeron, and then Dan Mullen. Per SDS:
quote:

“I think if I had to rank the top four right now,” McFarland said on the show, “I would go Saban, and in some order, you can sway me in this order — it would be Saban, it would be Kirby, it would Ed and it will be Dan Mullen, and I think there’s a line of delineation right there and then there’s a second-tier.”

Whiteboots is on the list because he sorta has to be there but no one takes it seriously. On the Saban/Chizik spectrum, everyone knows where Yawyaw actually ranks in all this.

He nailed the top4. Just messed up the order. Everyone is impressed by Kirby’s recruiting and roster talent.

Kirby has done nothing.

1. Saban 2. Orgeron (he owns Kirby. Makes no sense to put Kirby above him) 3. Mullen 4. Kirby 5. Who cares

The Kirby hate is rediculous. He has the program in better shape than at any point in Richt's tenure. He is clearly in the top three.

Kirby Dumb.

He has UGA in better shape than UGA was under Richt, yes. But he does NOT have UGA in better shape than LSU'S program. He should be behind Coach O.

Richt had to compete against a powerhouse florida most of the time he was there. Kirby has had a lack luster competition in the east. Kirby had lost most games that mean anything.

Don't know why Kirby is so highly regarded.

Head to head at their current locations: Saban 7-1 Orgeron 4-3 Smart 2-4 Mullen 1-5

O is #1 now boys. rotating door of great coordinators. Saban hit the wall.

By your current metric, Gene Chizik was destined for greatness after catching lightning in a bottle. Not saying Coach O can't prove himself over time but don't get cocky about this and Saban's demise...it has been rumored in the past before he went on another Natty run.

Saban's won 6 NC's and his Bama teams haven't lost more than 3 games in a decade. Assuming you're having a little fun but St Nick can lay claim to being the GOAT. O has a few more years to go before we know if he's going to be truly great at this job.

Until Kirby upgrades his offensive scheme, no way he's in my Top 4. I like the other 3, though.

Does he get credit for his defense?

Deaf, I feel like Kirby is getting dangerously close to a "Les Miles" legacy... Everybody loves the guy, does nothing wrong, wins a lot of games, GREAT defenses, but stubborn when it comes to his offense. Great D will get you plenty far, but it will only get you so far.

I would throw Stoops in the top 5 in the SEC. what he has done with the UK program is one of the better coaching jobs in the nation. Throw away his first 3 years and he is 32-20 (16-16 in conf).

Completely agree!

Definitely Nick and “O!” And Dan Mullen is doing a Great job at Florida. But “Kurbee” clearly doesn’t belong in this group!

i mean....Saban is tGOAT so yeah, he's number 1. Ed won a national title so he's definitely 2. But with that logic....is Jimbo in there?? Seems crazy. Maybe because he didn't do it in the SEC its devalued. Hell, Mark Stoops deserves an honorable mention.

I'm not quite sure I put Kirby in the top tier. Great recruiter, but he hasn't proven anything yet

So winning the SEC title and playing in the SECCG 3 times and making the playoffs twice and just short in the NCG against Bama - is not proving anything? Lol!!!

Kirby gets a lot of credit because of recruiting. However, he doesn't deserve all that credit cause UGA outspends almost every team in the SEC 3 to 1 on recruitment with the exception of only Alabama, in which it outspends Alabama by a little over a million dollars.

Georgia made the college football playoffs in 2017. I don’t remember them making it a second time though.
