A Former LSU Pitcher Is Back In The Transfer Portal

Oklahoma left-handed pitcher Cameron Johnson has entered the NCAA transfer portal after spending the past two seasons with the Sooners.

Johnson began his collegiate career at LSU before transferring to Oklahoma prior to the 2025 season. Per Yahoo Sports:

Johnson was listed as a junior during the 2026 season. LSU is actually where his playing days began at the collegiate level, only spending one year in Baton Rouge. Oklahoma snagged Johnson out of the portal ahead of the '25 campaign, only to find a good amount of success.

After going between starting and the bullpen, Johnson was a full-time starter in 2026. In 15 appearances, seven decisions were attached to his name. Johnson finished with six wins, only losing once. Johnson pitched 53.2 innings, finishing with an ERA of 4.36. Opposing batters had an average of just .205 against him, while striking out 72 times and drawing a walk on just 43 occasions.

When we faced him earlier this year, all the batters had to do was literally walk up to the plate and stand there with the bat on their shoulder.

He faced 13 batters in 1.1 IP (4 outs), walked 6, hit 1, and gave up 1 hit. He allowed 2 earned runs, though 5 runs scored. Struck out 2. 16.36 ERA. When your strikeout-to-walk ratio is less than one, it's not good. When it's below 0.5, that's a game you're not getting the win for. k/BB 1/3. He threw 67 pitches and did not make it through the second inning.

This was a situation where it would have worked out better for him to enter the draft straight out of HS.

Actually, he was eligible for the draft out of HS because I don't believe he pulled his name out. He missed his HS SR season with a serious injury the way I remember it. That is why LSU knew he would be showing up to campus...he wasn't going to be drafted.

I knew who the article was about before I even paid attention to the picture. That is why I am not concerned about Paz leaving LSU...exactly the same type of pitcher...EXACTLY the same! These guys are hyped up due to potential but they can't do the most fundamental requirement of a pitcher. That is the throw strikes and not walk essentially 1 batter per inning. Give me "performance", not "potential."

WE didn't see "Mr.Control"at all during the CWS. He can't throw strikes. The Cardinals didn't want him. Yeskie and OU's pitching coach could not fix him eithet.

Guy might not be able to throw a strike but he sure has a rabbits foot somewhere on his person. Bc he has two national championship rings. In fact if I’m a college coach I might make room for him just so his luck hopefully brings him a third ring!

He was at LSU in 24 and OU for 25 and 26, so he has 1 ring.

I’ll bet Johnson takes him back. He’s not too far off from being really good. Might be able to turn him into a Chad Jones type reliever. Just go in and throw heat for an inning.

He wasn’t bad but he has extreme pregame jitters or adrenaline rush that just sometimes gets the best of him. As he matures, which it seems that he’s starting to do that then I believe he can be a much better pitcher and maybe someone who develops into what he was thought of at one time. I’m not sure if Jay would go back after him but if it were me and did give him that chance, it would be working him very very slowly back into things. Non pressure inning here, pressure inning there, 4-5 outs here or there and he might just be a long reliever or closer type of guy. Give it all you have for 3-6 outs and go in there confident and on fire. He just seems like that type of pitcher to me, which is still very valuable.
