Payson High School in Arizona received A Cease & Desist Letter From Texas About Their Logo
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports
Payson High School in Arizona is nicknamed the Longhorns. Soooooo, guess who didn't like their Longhorns logo that looks exactly like their Longhorns logo, but purple...? You guessed it...

St Amant had to change their logo a few years back cause it was too similar to the Florida Gators. Now it looks better

Hope Texas wasn't recruiting any players from that school

My high school used the K State powercat logo. They came to us about the copyright but agreed to let us continue to use it for a small donation to the university every year. I think it was something like 100 bucks.

Wisconsin did this to THE Woodlands HS about 10 yrs ago, so they took the curve out of the W, and left it slanted... I wonder if Ohio State will come after them for being THE Woodlands HS.

And now that I think of it, I can think of a bunch of high schools and even middle schools that use the t.u. longhorn as their mascot. Hell, I feel like half of the school districts in TX have a school with longhorns as the mascot.

My Texas high school got a cease and desist letter from the University of Missouri. It happens.

This is a registered trademark. If a school wants to use it, they must get permission and pay royalties. If you don't protect your trademark, you gradually lose the ability to claim exclusivity. As for the Green Bay logo (developed in 1961), Georgia was granted permission by Green Bay in 1963, and likewise, Grambling was granted permission in 1964.

This is the reason. ^^^^^ Schools didn't want to do it, but if they don't someone could come along and make money off of it and Texas would not have the power to fight it. Lots of schools have been doing this for several years now.

Rutgers just did this to Ruston. It's incredibly petty.

There are slight differences. Judge should throw it out.

Got to protect the brand.

there's no likelihood of confusion. People don't see that high school team's logo and think it's Univ of Texas. Another example is Grambling, UGA, and the Green Bay Packers, which all use the same "oval G", and I'm sure other colleges and numerous high schools use it too.

Except the difference is a giant boring “G” and a unique emblem Texas created so yeah I’d think it’s the Longhorns logo just like other sports fan. Never thought I’d defend Texas Jesus Austin is frickin me up but in all fairness they should protect it.

All you need to do is change it a little bit. Plenty of schools have the longhorn as there mascot. They just don’t copy it pixel for pixel from UT

This shite is getting ridiculous. Miami did this to U High a could years ago. Ohio st is trying to trademark “The”. It’s getting out of control...

Just curious, did the Packers ever send a cease and desist letter to UGa?
user avatar

Yes they did, but UGA worked with the Packers, and they came to a design agreement.
