Was so disappointed by Waikiki Beach, especially when a local told me they have to bring in the sand. The view is pretty, but the beach was narrow, crowded and had course sand.

I'm not calling it absolutely terrible. I'm answering the OPs question. It's overrrated.

Mississippi barrier islands are nice if you like a natural environment, and fishing. Ship Island has its south facing beach.

Cat Island for some early fishing, then relaxing on the beach at Ship is my favorite summertime tradition.

1 - Gulf South Beaches. Since the explosion of owner renting became so popular costs have gone through the roof and people continue to bend over and take it.

It really has gotten ridiculous, especially these $100-200 "cleaning fees" + parking fees, rental fees, etc.

Because the third picture is the best representation of what it looks like in person, and I found it to be not nearly as beautiful and magestic as Alaska or Montana. I've also been to beaches in the USVI which impressed me more than the Grand Canyon.

So I am guessing you didn't want to hike or travel much out of the little visitor center area.

If the GC weren't as busy, I could do it more. It's still a beautiful spot.

Most of the GC is incredibly desolate. Try getting away from the South Rim tourism. Google Toroweap.

I'm not trolling. If anything, this thread is proving my point that it's a way overrated destination. "Overrated" doesn't necessarily mean "the worst thing ever." It's just not nearly as great as people make it out to be when the gulf coast beach is hardly a "destination" at all.

You said the gulf water is gross. That's either trolling or absolute stupidity. You choose.

I love the PNW, and have visited beaches in Oregon and Washington. Again, you're either being contrarian to be a douche, or you're really stupid in holding them up as a true coastal destination over the gulf coast.

really? I might be a little short sided because I was lucky enough to be able to raft the upper half and hike out to the south rim from Phantom Ranch, but that trip was borderline life altering

Disney world - you have kids? Fine. You see it as a vacation destination as an adult? Lol

Vegas- over priced & cheesy

Destin- due to over crowding of trash it has become terrible. Traffic, terrible restaurants, crowded beaches

Austin- just an inauthentic New Orleans copycat

I've been twice and been to both the South and North Rim. The north rim is way less crowded and offers some unique views that the South rim doesn't, but it's harder to get to.
I prefer Sedona to the Grand Canyon and enjoyed the hiking and sights there a great deal.

You're referring to that rip off of a waterfall? $95 to visit it due to the reservation? Yeah...that's overrated. So is the Grand Canyon. It's a hole in the flat ground.
I'm going because it's on the way this summer, but I'd much rather see Flagstaff or Sedona.

Saying gulf beaches are overrated as a destination isn't contrarian at all. Have you not been to The Pelican Pub in Pacific City? That beach was beautiful, the sand was fine, and there's tons to do nearby.

I would guess not many on here have, but it is one of the most beautiful spots on Earth. Stunning.

PNW beaches are more diverse - driftwood, cliffs, rock formations, dunes, tidal pools, etc. Golf beaches offer swimming and other water activities that you really can't do in the colder waters in Oregon and Washington. Gulf beaches also have the sugar white sand.

In short, I appreciate both for what they offer.

People were swimming in the water last April in Pacific City.

I agree. The sand is a fine white. Anything else that sets it apart? Is this seriously the one reason it's NOT overrated?

I have no problem with the people who go there and enjoy it. It's the closest beach to most people on this board. So it's a popular destination and understandably so.

I prefer to hike a beach in the Redwoods or La Push than lay out like a slob in Destin. Just my opinion of course...

Camping at Flint Ridge or Gold Bluffs (which I have) and waking up before dawn break, hiking up to the mouth of the Klamath whilst whale watching, is something you can't experience in the south. And making eye contact with a gray whale at 6am at the mouth of the river is like an outer body experience I have never felt before.
