The Gulf water in wonderful in the summer; it's always COLD on the Left Coast. Even August in San Diego.

You a non-swimmer, who doesn't get in the water?

I've been in the Oregon Water in April and Hawaiian water in December. Didn't go in on our Napa trip where we went to the coast for a day but it was beautiful.

I'm sure the temperature is fine. That's not the point.

Charleston - keeps getting ranked super high on best cities list, but you can do everything you need to in 2 days. Good long weekend trip but you need to get around the lowcountry to enjoy yourself for longer. Or get a boat.
You could put Savannah in the same category.

(not overrated) Grand Canyon - I thought it would be overrated until I saw it. Only budgeted 1 hour stop on my way to Bryce Canyon and wish I could have stayed longer. Borderline underrated.

I'm not trolling. If anything, this thread is proving my point that it's a way overrated destination. "Overrated" doesn't necessarily mean "the worst thing ever." It's just not nearly as great as people make it out to be when the gulf coast beach is hardly a "destination" at all.

Of course. This isn't the rant or OT.

I just don't see the gulf beaches as that great of a vacation or getaway. Most people go in the summer. It's hot. They sit out there and drink. What else is it good for? I can sit out and drink anywhere. The beach/water can be fun, sure. But much more fun elsewhere. Hawaii was amazing. Where I stayed, we had our own manmade lagoon. Oregon was just much more enjoyable because a vacation to the coast there meant more than just the beach, it meant hiking and wineries and the cheese factory.

I love beaches and they have some great ones with the sugar sand and water, it wasnt until I made it to the point in my life I had other options. The redneck riviera has beautiful beaches.

So do other places.

Turks and Caicos

Thailand

Those are nice. But not in the US.

The sand is fine... and then? Not sure what's so "beautiful" about it, especially compared to the two locations you posted.

People should research international travel because a lot of places can be reached for just a little more than going to to places in the US.

If you want to relax on the beach then not much is different , white sand is white sand.

Mississippi barrier islands are nice if you like a natural environment, and fishing. Ship Island has its south facing beach.

Las Vegas
Miami
Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg
Myrtle Beach
Niagara Falls

Orlando probably should be on my list (considering it's apparently a top 5 U.S. destination), but I can admit that Disney is an awesome place for children.

WTF? The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. If you are finding GC overrated....you are doing it wrong. How is this overrated??

Because the third picture is the best representation of what it looks like in person, and I found it to be not nearly as beautiful and magestic as Alaska or Montana. I've also been to beaches in the USVI which impressed me more than the Grand Canyon.

If the GC weren't as busy, I could do it more. It's still a beautiful spot.

Overall overrated for me
-Vegas (Mid 20s but really at this point, I should be more into it, but there's other places I want see/visit).

-Times Square, NYC

-Pike Place (It's still really cool but the more time I've spent in Seattle, I just try to prioritize it less compared to some of the neighborhoods in town). Have no desire to do Starbucks when I'm in town. There's some really good local coffee spots in that city.

-Niagara Falls

-Orlando

I hate both when I've gone there. I usually try to stay in townsend but it's been a while since I've been in the area.

I'm not going to go 5 but I'll go two

1 - Gulf South Beaches. Since the explosion of owner renting became so popular costs have gone through the roof and people continue to bend over and take it.

2 - Vegas

Vegas isn't really overrated to me, everyone knows Vegas is fake as shite. But it's fake as shite with plenty of fun stuff to do and good restaurants. Also, most everyone knows it can get really depressing after a little while.

My thoughts exactly. For the people that think Vegas are overrated, what were your expectations going in?

It's known as the #1 domestic destination for gambling and partying. There's no culture or charm, but it's not advertised or thought of as such. In what ways did it disappoint?

The weather is hot. The hotels/condos suck. This is an overrated thread. It's an overrated tourist destination. Period.

Go when it's not so hot. The water and beaches are pretty nice most times of the year from Pensacoula east. I guess you went in August when there might have been an algae bloom.

There are good condos. Sorry you stayed at the Phoenix properties in Gulfshores.

Seriously, I'm not saying they are great, but not some hell hole.

I've been to beaches on the east coast as well as California and the sand and water wasn't near as nice to me.
