What’s the farthest out of your way you’ve gone to mark something off a list

I have travel checkoff lists: states and Major League Baseball stadiums. I have a work appointment that ends at noon on a Friday. I am considering driving six hours to see a game, spending night in hotel and driving four hours back the next day to catch my flight. So roughly ten hours driving, extending a trip by 24 hours, and paying out of pocket for a hotel room so that I can see the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. By myself. I’m sure some of you can top this.

I rented a U-Haul pickup in Fairbanks, AK., to spend a day on the infamous Dalton Highway and get inside the Arctic Circle. Few companies that rent vehicles will let you drive it on the Dalton. So I had a car rental (out of Anchorage) and truck rental at the same time.

I drove 25-30% of the highway. Would love to do the whole thing one day.

Are you doing this simply to check a box or will you actually enjoy this experience?

Drove with a buddy from Houston to Chicago in a big moving van. Only went along for the ride because we stopped in Memphis for 2 days. Flew back home.

We flew to Italy for a dinner reservation.

Now, we turned it into a two and a half week trip, so I don’t know if that counts as going out of the way for something, but that’s all I can think of.

I remember that thread. Looked like it was worth it. By the way, I’ll be in Boston for a bit next week. Staying in the back bay. Might be able to grab a beer wed or Thursday if you are around. Plans a little in flux. Client dinners but also trying to get to Fenway. Will probably be back in October.

To the poster above, I think I would enjoy the game. Not so much the driving or the extra day sleeping in a hotel (particularly that I’m paying for). But game would be fun. And I do get some satisfaction out of marking it off the list. I know others might find that odd but to each their own I guess.

I’m doing the whole baseball stadium thing too. Kaufman stadium is worth it. Very underrated stadium. I flew to Pittsburgh to catch 3 games in April. I have flown to Chicago for 2 cub games, a white Sox game and to see Chicago. When I went to New York for 11 days, I went to a Mets and a Yankees game. Boston will be next to see a Red Sox game

Recently did a road trip up north then back south. One Tuesday I drove from Rapid City to Minneapolis to catch a Twins game. The route included driving through North Dakota. Will never visit that shitehole again.

But hey, it’s now one of 37 states I’ve been to.

I motorbiked from Siem Reap up to Phnom Kulen National Park and deep into the Cambodian jungle on said motorbike looking for Srah Damrei, stone elephants that look like they belong in a Tomb Raider movie.

Flew to Kathmandu Nepal one way (I wasn't sure when I would be finished and ready to come back, so I didn't buy round trip) to complete the Everest Base Camp trek. Spent 12 days on the trek, 7 total days in the capital.

Rented a car in Cabo San Lucas to drive up to La Paz, in order to get a photo at the sign that said "Tropico de Cancer".

And you MLB stadium/game chasers.... to each their own. That bullshite was fun in my late teens and early 20s, but screw that noise. If you were talking CFB.. then yea, I could get behind that.

Yes (busted alter). Great views, sense of accomplishment, made good friends with my group, and it’s one of those countries I developed a great relationship with.

I have been to Kathmandu and took a flight to see Everest. It was cool. Would love to hike to EBC one day, though.

Not really out of the way to see anything in particular, but a few years ago the wife and I drove back to Birmingham from Asheville NC using only back roads, no interstates. Saw some interesting sights and towns along the way.

Went to Portland for a conference few years back. Conference ended Thursday at noon, got in my car and drove out to Cannon Beach for a late lunch and beach walk. Then drove back the opposite way to see Multnomah Falls and Mount Hood.

A lot of driving but worth it to see.
