Count me as one of the idiots that have broken their leg while skiing. Granted I had on ski blades that had bindings that weren't like skis and didn't pop off easily when you fall. I thought I was going to be Shaun White on the last day, and....well....it didn't work out. Broke my leg right at the top of the boot. Tibula completely broke; fibula fractured. The Doc said it would be like taking a piece of chalk and twisting it in different directions at each end until it snaps. Fun times.

Buttermilk Mountain just outside of Aspen, the entire mountain is greens and is a perfect place to learn, plus Aspen is only a few miles away, so there is a legit restaurant and nightlife scene for adults

Its really not hard at all to drive in 20-30 mins in the morning and save a ton. Ski lodging is all based on being within walking distance or ski in ski out, which is really really nice with kids but with adults completely unnecessary.
This is true unless there is a weekend powder day, then it can turn into a headache and being close has some real value. Especially places like Winter Park and Copper.

Ten years ago wife and I had never been skiing, wanted the experience. Going during the Mardi Gras break.
We found the best option was to fly to Montreal, drive just over two hours to Stowe Vermont. Stayed at bed and breakfast, got skiing lessons spent a couple days. Drove back and spent a day in Montreal before flying home. Great trip and cheaper than had we gone west of the Mississippi.

Yeah airfare really can make a huge difference along with lodging.
The only issue with Mardi Gras is that it is "spring break" time and prices may be increased.
If you are only a group of adults the cheapest and best time to try to go for the most part is late January during the week. It can be the coldest depending on where you are going, so that can be a negative also.

That would kill two birds with one stone. I was just saying i wanted to go to Montreal.

Air Canada has non stop New Orleans to Montreal.

I love this suggestion and may need to look into. I’ve never skied the east coast but have just loved every time I’ve stepped foot in Vermont.

Venn diagram issue here.
I have never skied anywhere outside of the Rockies, but everyone I meet from the east coast says they have wet snow that packs down to ice. Is Vermont the exception to that?

You don’t have to stay in Aspen, stay in Snowmass or get yourself a cheap condo there,

Angel fire is probably cheapest

I've boarded all over Vermont (Stowe, Killington, Mt. Snow) in every month from Dec to April. Short answer: It depends. It's great when they get good snow, but if it's been a week or so, it is like riding on an ice cube.
March for a beginner would be questionable.
