WDW, for first time, opened stand-by lines for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance today

Reports are line is already at 3 hour wait.

For those unfamiliar, Rise of the Resistance is the major e-ticket attraction at Disney's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Until now you have had to request a boarding group at 7AM on the morning of your visit at both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. The boarding groups for the day are booked up within seconds. No boarding group: no ride.
We did this at Disneyland a couple of weeks ago. People have complained about the process because you have to be on your phone at 7 AM to request a boarding group, may not get one at all, and if you do you are locked into a time to be at the at the attraction. When we were there, our boarding group just happened to be during the middle of a dining reservation and there wasn't much we could do about it. Fortunately, they allowed us to ride it late.
Now Disney is experimenting with pausing the boarding group process in favor of a traditional ride cue (aka stand-by line). Like I said, it's already ay a 3 hour wait today.
Personally, I favor getting up at 7AM to request a time to ride other than killing three hours standing in line for one attraction.
Ideally, some kind of hybrid approach will likely be the norm and the lines will decrease with time as newer rides are built.
As for the ride itself, it is quite spectacular--by far the most immersive thing Disney has ever built. The sound, lighting, 3d projections, animatronics, live actors, and special commissioned John Williams score all make you feel like you're in a Star Wars movie.

So you may disney prices to go to that park and still can't ride the best ride in the park
What a ripoff?

You can, but you have to reserve a spot or get in line. The problem is everyone else who's there wants to ride it too.

Can you get your Disney Vacation Planner to do this for you?

They did this so people will see a huge wait time and be more willing to pay $20 for a fast pass to this ride when they roll that out soon.

I was there this morning. Official wait time got up to 150 minutes, but it’s questionable whether the wait was actually that long. I saw it get down to an hour before lunch. Of course, the ride is currently down.
Rope dropped this morning and was in the first group on. Was so much better than the virtual queue.

The ride is definitely worth the hassle and the wait. Unlike Avatar Flight of Passage imo.
The entire experience is about 20 mins, starting with the cast members moving you around the various rooms and scenes, even if the "ride" part itself is only a few minutes. Hopefully this model is here to stay because you get a lot more bang for your buck and are fully immersed.

Best ride ever...only rode it once. The second time we got was too late in the day and we had a dining reservation in another park.
I couldnt get over how it really feels like they transported you into space...hard to explain to people that never rode it.

Meh I’ve seen Soarin at 300 minutes.

I've ridden it once. Very impressive but given that I'm not a Star Wars fan, probably doesn't make my top 5 at Disney. It's one of those things I think everyone should ride at least once, just given its grandiosity. But I'd never wait 2 hours to ride it again.

To each his own.
2 hours is 9 holes of golf so I think I’d rather spend my time and treasure on that.
I went to Disney when my kids were little. It was fun. Maybe I’ll go back if some grandkids come along, but waiting in long lines is not my idea of leisure time.

I love WDW but I agree.
They should do more virtual lines and fewer physical lines. Open up some more restaurants/shops/indoor areas for people to wait for their virtual spot to be ready.
