Travel Ruby: A Day in Vegas on $50
Note: You have to play in the My Vegas app daily to build up points for the Shark Reef ticket and they go fast! Me & the boyfriend snagged one before we went.

Check out the old strip downtown one day or night.

bluestem75, congrats to you two! I haven’t been able to really dig into the Travel Ruby vids yet. I’m thinking after this weekend I can give them my full attention. From the small sample I watched, it looks like she gives a pretty good feel for the place. I like to think we’ll be able to hit the ground running, so to speak, after checking her out.

Mob Museum is worth it and relatively inexpensive.

She’s great. So helpful for finding places I didn’t know about before our trip this past fall. The $50/day one popped up in my feed today. Thought you’d like that one.

Get an outfitter to rent you a kayak and float the black canyon below Hoover dam.

Haven’t seen it mentioned but you might like the Arts District / S Main St area - some cool little bars (Re-Bar, Velveteen Rabbit), vintage/junk shops, art galleries, etc. Off the beaten path but easy to get to between the Strip and Downtown.
Try the Peppermill for a (relatively) reasonable restaurant with a varied menu and a good dose of old school Las Vegas kitsch; think purple, pink & chrome diner-style decor with a side of lava lamps. Pretty good, basic food, too, for the price. Have a cocktail sitting around the fireplace pit in the lounge/bar area listening to some retro tunes. Northern end of the strip just past Encore & Wynn.
Speaking of those hotels, as a first-timer, you need to visit as many of the mega- hotels as you can (those and Caesar’s, Bellagio, Paris, Venetian, Mandalay Bay, Aria -just walking around in them is sensory overload. One way is the monorail that runs along a decent sample of the biggest ones, but be forewarned - those places are HUGE and quite a hike just to get to the monorail stop. For example, it takes maybe 10-15 minutes to walk from the monorail stop in Paris to the front of the hotel, and that’s without stopping to gawk at stuff.

I used to work for a company years ago that was initially back by the...ummm...how do I describe it...a "very tight group of Italians".
We ate at some amazing Italian restaurants off the strip that they absolutely swore by. This was a while back, and I have no idea if they're still around, but if you find some Italian joints that have been there 20+ years, then go there.

The problem with alot of these recommendations is that if his college friends chose Vegas as their destination, they likely won't be interested in any of this shite and they just want to gamble & party.
If that's the case, OP won't be spending much time with his friends and might as well go somewhere better suited towards his interests.
