Vegas First Timer - Must Do?
Posted on 2/1/24 at 10:59 am

Meeting college friends in Vegas next month. Never been before. On a tight budget. Don’t drink or gamble. Attending one show; otherwise nothing planned yet. Recs for must-see requested. Also, good, inexpensive eats. Will have one day there after friends leave. Enjoy history, art, and gardens. Partner is into architecture. Suggestions?

ETA: This might work as a group activity. At least one attendee has pretty deep pockets. Any recommendations for who to book with?

Go hike red rocks. Doesn’t sound like the city is for you tbh

Don’t listen to posters telling you don’t go. You can have a great time in Vegas for cheap.

Here's my list. I recommend this stuff to everyone going on a first trip.
1. Walk the Strip. Pop into casinos and look around. Drop a $20 in slots all along the way. Sign up for their players cards. Even if you don't gamble, you still should walk the strip and check out the casinos/resorts.
2. Have drinks in a cool bar. Relax and people watch! I love the Chandelier Bar at the Cosmo, Petrossian at the Bellagio, The Overlook Lounge at the Wynn (used to be Parasol Up). It's not about the drinks, it's about the people.
3. See Vegas from up high. There’s lot of options. High Roller, Foundation Room, The Palms (Apex Social Club), 108 Lounge. I like the 108 on top of the Stratosphere. Hit it up in the late afternoon for happy hour on the way to Fremont Street.
4. Fremont Street. See the old hotels and pop into some places for a little cheaper table games or better odds. The El Cortez is sort of a dive, but it’s got great blackjack rules. See the Golden Nugget, the 4 Queens, Binions, etc. and all that neon and flash. If you’ve been to Bourbon St., Fremont is sort of similar.
5. See a show. It could be a Cirque extravaganza, a concert, a play/musical, a tribute show. Just pick what you like.
6. Make a reservation and have a really nice dinner. Options abound. Don’t do your dinner the night you do the show. That way, you’re not rushed.
7. If it’s summer, have a pool day.
8. See the Bellagio Fountains and Conservatory.
Things in the area that aren't Vegas but fun...
Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Hoover Damn, Lake Mead, Mt. Charleston.
Tight budget might be difficult for Vegas. It's a pricy place. Off Strip will probably be cheaper or Fremont.

the helicopter tours are expensive as hell
first time, see as many casinos as you can and get the player cards for free gambling and perks
take the paris casino elevator to the top, it's not too expensive, awesome views
visit the vegas sign
fremont is neat as well and can stop at pawn shop on the way
you can get cheaper show tickets day of if you time it right but one show is reasonable
food and drink can get expensive but they have some cheaper options along the strip

These are great suggestions, and just what I’m looking for. Thank you so much!
We are staying at an Airbnb, that is supposed to be near the Strip. I’m hoping to eat cheaply while there, but prefer to eat out, rather than cook in the rental. Last time I was in a casino resort (years ago), I seem to recall that you can eat for not much. Dunno if that’s still the case.
Tickets for show (Cirque “Love”) are already booked.

Thanks, nicholastiger! Some really useful information. I like the Fremont option.

Thanks, Shexter! Unless our deep-pocketed friend decides to spring for the group, I think this is probably not going to happen. I appreciate your posting your findings!

The Bellagio is a must tour. The Conservatory will be themed "Lunar New Year" until 3/2/24. LINK
In the nearby Caesar's Forum, check out Park West Gallery. They have original works by Picasso and Salvadore Dali.
Eataly in Park MGM is awesome for a morning pastry or a very good sandwich for lunch.
All three of these properties are within walking distance and mostly connected by other properties. You feet hardly have to hit the sidewalk.

For good and inexpensive eats, I can’t recommend Village Pub and Grill at Ellis Island Casino enough. It’s just off the strip(Behind Paris, I believe).
Fish & Chips, Prime Rib, great steak & egg breakfast special.
