My family is in the process of making our vacation plans. We have been to Gatlinburg numerous times and really enjoy it. This year the crew is considering going to Memphis. I've never been to Memphis and I'd like to know if this is someplace you could spend a week. I don't want to be stuck someplace for a week that just drags on. We were just looking for something closer to home than Gatlinburg. Our drive to Gatlinburg is 11 hours . I would rather drive the 11 hours then spend a 5 Hour Dr. and not be happy with the destination. What do y'all think? Any recommendations on something closer that is a good place to go and stay? We will be going about mid July. The other thing is in Gatlinburg at least we have a chance for some cooler weather. Thanks

Edited now that it's on the Travel Board.

Wish I had some good insights for you...maybe eat a ton of BBQ and go check out Blind Side's high school?

The only person who could make me stay in Memphis for a week is a judge.

Then don't spend a week in Memphis. Try looking for something in the Ozarks area of NW Arkansas maybe. You can stay in Memphis for a night or two on the way, if you just want to say you've been there. You will get your fill with that - I promise.

I don't have any suggestions but I definitely say NO to a week in Memphis. No, no way, no how. A couple of days YES ... a week? NO!

How about the Georgia area? Or North/South Carolina? Isn't there nice hiking, waterfalls, etc there??

Northern Georgia. Basically same terrain as Gatlinburg the hills are just shorter and fewer tourist. Helen Ga is an interesting place. Looks like an old German town. You have waterfalls, hiking, river tubing. It's a nice area.

Nashville was a all right destination for us. Bars downtown are pretty good.
