Major tourist destinations are often disappointing.

Standing in the Sistine Chapel, a lifelong dream of mine, was a huge disappointment as we were crammed in there with so many people and then hustled out.

They bought the wrong tour. I was in the chapel so long I was starting to doze off. Skip the line is for the basilica not the chapel, but the line moves fast. Sirens the money for the happy hour Museum tour and you go in the chapel after it's closed then get fed and given drinks in the courtyard after.

St Peter's is amazing even for non believers. It's just so grand. So many churches and cathedrals could fit inside. I've never seen anything on that scale.
Is very overwhelming and totally worth it.

Two of the most touristed cities in the world and you were contributing to what you dislike. There are plenty of other, less touristed places to visit. Like Bourdain used to say, be a traveler, not a tourist.

We went to Italy in July and had a great time. Rented a private Villa in Tuscany about an hour outside of Florence. Rented a car and had a great week exploring a bunch of the little towns around us.

I went to the Sistine chapel 5 years ago and it was a similar experience. Those places are always packed

Can’t really speak to destinations, as I’ve done so much work travel and not able to do personal where I want to go, but yes, too many Fing people are travel…

It’s to the point of not being worth it. Dealing with the trash and stupidity these days is getting tiring.

With all due respect to OP if he went in October and it was busy it was probably just a lazily planned trip. Sounds like you went Saturday mid day or something similar. It’s just like any other tourist place, go on a Tuesday morning as soon as it opens in the shoulder season and you have it to yourself. Maybe there was a special occasion? Idk.

I’m not really sure what you can expect there’s 7 billion people in the world and no one could travel for 2 years and this year is the make up for the past 2 years for international travel….

Thanks for the info. My question was specifically related to slippy stating to go before “he dies”.

Planning for crowds can be critical. Disney is the classic example, of course, but there are lots of other places.

I got to Petra when the park opened at 6:00 AM, and it was absolutely magical -- exceeded the hype. I walked through the Siq, and the Treasury suddenly appeared. It was as amazing to me as it was to Indiana Jones. But by 10:00 AM, a swarm of buses had dumped tremendous numbers of tourists into Petra. There were all kinds of people screaming as they "rode" camels and took pictures with "Nabatean warriors," and vendors were hawking their trinkets everywhere. If I had arrived at Petra at 10:00, I would have had a completely different experience.

I think some of it is people trying to do everything the most when they travel which means tight schedules with no flexibility. Then people get pissed when everything isn't exactly what/how they expect.

I'm actually a fan of shorter trips, but I understand the trade-off is I won't be able to see/do all of the cool things in London/Rome/Singapore, etc. in only 2-3 days. I try to keep schedules flexible and account for extra travel/walking/train time. Makes dealing with the crowds much easier.

The rise of a middle class in China has really contributed to this greatly.

I just got back from Rome with Tauck.

We had 30 minutes in the Sistine Chapel with 20 other people after closing hours..... it was amazing.

Any major sight basically, requires planning these days. Sadly the common tourist doesn't think about it. I'm not trying to be a jerk to the OP, but it was October and not even a very busy month. I'd bet he went during a busy time of day. I don't know enough about the Vatican to know when is best to go, but most places midweek early is the best.

On a recent trip to Venice, he watched as couples on gondola rides spent almost no time looking at each other or their surroundings. “And they shoot everything vertical for Instagram,” he says, laughing. “I just thought of that right now. It makes no sense. Our eyes are designed to look at things horizontally.”

100% I've had good experiences when traveling to busy places, but I've really researched and planned. I've taken the best tour for me instead of the popular one that you easily find sold on the internet. I've also gotten up super early to be one of the first ones there. Usually the buses arrive around 10 and it's not fun anymore. Just know that if you want to do every thing between 10 and 3 on Saturday, you will probably not have the best experience. Most people just buy packages and then they end up with a ton of people on a bus who all bought that same package. Do research and it's a lot better.

Sounds like the ol boomer who retired in Destin and is now mad that locals have to deal with traffic during the summer.

You go at the end of the day, then they take you to the courtyard for dinner. Then you eat while everyone but the Pope and Night watchmen clear out. Then you go through some of the galleries topping it off with the chapel at then end.

Got it. Looks like Tauck Tours is a full soup to nuts operator (airfare, hotels, transfers). Was looking just for a tour of Vatican/Sistine Chapel.

Tourism consists of travelling and more is better. The prices are so low because so many people are travelling.
