Wife booked flights into Barcelona and out of Madrid in March.

9 nights. I wouldn't say I'm hugely interested in Madrid, have been wanting to go to Barcelona for a long time.

The wife also wants to spend a few nights in Andalucia, probably Seville, and take a day trip to Alhambra/Granada or Mezquita/Cordoba one of those days.

Current plans are 3 nights in Barcelona, 3 in Seville, 2 in Madrid.

what did you love in Spain? What cities did you visit? what would you absolutely skip?

Thanks for your time.

Madrid is kind of meh as a city I thought. Although they do have 2 of the best art museums on the planet.

Worth it for the sofia and the prado. Then just go get tapas and drink.

I've heard mixed things about Madrid. Some like it some really dislike it. I've heard that for Spain, its kind of lacking in "unique" and is just basically a big city.

I do have some pretty good restaurants and tapas places I'm really interested in.

I'd like an extra day in Barcelona but wife really has her heart set on Seville so I'm fine with whatever.

Might want to take a half day trip out to the abbey on Montserrat. It's an ancient abbey up in the mountains. Great views. Bring some decent shoes if you want to try to hike up to some of the hermitages.

You can get there quickly on a train.

Here's a hermitage:

Madrid is less pretentious and more Spanish. They siesta, and eat at 10pm. Then they let at midnight until 5pm. Great sights, amazing museums, and go to Segovia and others as Day trips.

Barcelona is bigger and badder so to speak, but less Spanish in general

Went to Barcelona which I loved and to Cadaques to see Salvador Dali's house. Cadaques which is on the Costa Brava, was beautiful. In Barcelona, we did the Sangrada familia and 2 of Gaudi's apartments he designed. All worthwhile. The Picasso museum was a disappointment but the Miro museum we enjoyed. For the most part we stayed away from the gothic quarter which is just a giant tourist trap. We stayed in the Montjuic area near Carrer de Blai which is a pedestrian street with mostly locals hanging out.

Montserrat is cool. But La Sagrada Familia shook me. I could spend three week in the Barcelona area and not get tired of it. It’s one of the ultimate walking and foodie cities.

I'd consider adding Valencia to your itinerary as well if you can squeeze an extra day or two in there. It's less glamorous than Barcelona, but it's also less crowded, cheaper, cleaner, and has more of an authentic feel to it. The museum complex is world-class and home to the largest aquarium in Europe, there is a great mix of history and culture in the city and it shows in the Roman and Moorish architecture. On a short trip YMMV, but I lived in Valencia this past July and after a few days in Barcelona I was very glad to get back to Valencia. It's just a really cool city, imo.

That being said, Barcelona is cool. Sagrada Familia is a masterpiece and I would highly recommend listening to the 99% Invisible podcast about it on your way there. Go up to Park Guell while you're there for a great view of the city and to see some more of Gaudi's work. I found the Picasso museum to be pretty interesting, mainly because there are more of his lesser known works on display. I'd recommend doing a guided tour or at the very least getting an audio guide to get the most out of your experience. The Rick Steves Audio Europe app is a great resource as well.

I only spent a day in Barcelona, and didn't really get the appeal. I was tired that day though(backpacking) and pretty much just hung around one of the plazas reading and napping all day. Don't even remember which one. Anyway, my Barcelona review is worthless so ignore it.

Seville is awesome. My favorite city I visited in Spain. When I was there, it was a party city, but it's also beautiful. Lots of young Spaniards, along with a lot of young folks from all over. The Spanish women there LOVED Americans then, though that's not great info since you're married.

I would love a bit of paella right now and a day in the Prado.

Mostly, yeah. Spain was the last visit on my three week backpacking trip in Europe in the late 90's. I had intended to spend more time there, but fell in love with France so my plans changed. It was a dumb review meant for entertainment. I regretfully didn't really dig deep into Spanish culture while there.

Consider going to Basque Country (San Sebastian / Bilbao) and up to Asturias to the Picos. You'll thank me later.
