Thinking of taking the train from New Orleans to Salt Lake city next year. What are your experiences on this route. Also did you do the roomette or the sleeper.

I have no real advice, but those kind of train trips take forever

The only long train trip I've taken in the US was from NOLA to Charlotte, NC. The train was about 12 hours late getting into Charlotte.

Yeah, I heard they tend to run late, but 12 hours...oof.

I'm thinking it'll be 3 days trip. Maybe a little more with delays.

It is about a 3.5 hr flight. I have to ask why? What are your expectations that have you considering doing this?

I'm nostalgic but 3 days on the greyhound of the rails sounds miserable to me. I'd love the idea of old school first class treatment on a slow trip across the country but Amtrak isn't going to give you that in my opinion.

Ive taken several overnight amtrak trains and they almost always are at least 5 hours late and and a couple of have been 10-12 hours late. They share tracks with freight trains in most parts of the country, the east coast being the exception. So you end up sitting still for long periods waiting on freights to clear switches.

Do not do it! we thought it'd be fun to take the train from Colorado to Chicago then to NOLA several years ago when our kids were little. Train getting to Denver was 17 hours LATE, they never told us the truth, continued to lie to us telling it was nearing arrival. We had to sleep in the Denver train station, no available hotel close by. By the time we finally got on the train, all the food they had left was canned soup and cereal, we finally got to Chicago but missed our scheduled train to NOLA and said fak it, bought plane tix home from O'hare...never again.

From what I know, you have to go all the through Chicago to get to SLC, unless there is a route im unaware of. I think it would be a ~72 hour trip one way
I have considered taking the Amtrak from NOLA to Chicago, seems like a fun summer trip. Would fly the way back.

just checked prices/times for random october days.
Amtrak roundtrip is $40 more expensive than non stop delta flights. The amtrak cost is for a seat only and no sleeper, and requires 58 hours of travel rather than 3.5.
The 58 hours assumes you make your connection in Chicago.
Don't put yourself or anyone you love through that shite.

Ok, looks the train idea is a nonstarter. Thanks for the input

We did that exact same thing this summer. Fun trip, but don't do it unless you are getting a bedroom or roomette.

Ignore a lot of this thread, if you have the time and schedule flexibility and can afford to get a room the train is awesome. That said, not sure NOLA to SLC is feasible by train but I agree with the Denver suggestion.

I've been on both routes. If you really want to enjoy the scenery and tune out, maybe read a book, this will certainly work. You have about a 4-5 hour connection in Chicago so keep an eye on that, that's tight by Amtrak standards.
Also you have to really get your mindset right. The service could be B+, it could be D+. Coach would be a very long painful ride, I used to do coach overnights in college because it was CHEAP but also not comfy at all.
If I may suggest an alternative - UAL has directs to Denver. The train's scenery between Hammond and Fort Morgan CO is very boring. Unless you are really trying to get through a thick novel, fly in to DEN, grab the train for the ride across the Rockies and Wasatch, and enjoy the mountains.
