Forgot to add, if you do decide to ride the train all the way, the Mississippi River crossing at Burlington IA is a known Bald Eagle spot. Last time I crossed there it was like a mosquito swarm.
Lately there's been a huge one buzzing the camp for the last few weeks. Very cool.

I did NOLA to Chicago while I was in college. It was a really fun experience when I had unlimited time to do whatever I wanted. If you are in a similar position I say find a Rocky Mountaineer route you like and give it a go
