This. They used to be solid if you were willing to put up with their cheap bullshite. Now, they are horrific.

This times 2... As someone who has over a million miles with them.

Had my flights to Chicago cancelled yesterday with 0 notice. I actually looked myself. Got the notice 6hrs later it was cancelled

Southwest is by far the shittiest airline, and my last week of trying to fly with them confirms it. They are flying in the same weather as every other airline but have multiples of the amount of cancelled flight. People may laugh but I will 100% fly Spirit over Southwest any day of the week.

I’ll never book them again if I have a choice.

Just a theory, but Southwest is known for fast turnarounds and higher equipment utilization, which means they can have less planes and crews, thus lower overhead, thus lower prices (at one time at least).

If you have less planes and crews but the weather forces your turnarounds and schedule into the gutter, you don't have planes to fill the timetable.

This reminds me of the Just-in-Time economy during covid. For the last 30 years business has been striving to reduce inventory of raw materials in order to use less working capital and thus lower prices. When the steel mill or the railroad that carries the steel shuts down, and you only have three days of steel on hand to make toasters, you stop making toasters.

This is somehow my first time having something like this happen to me so this might be a dumb question. But will Southwest pay for my new flight on a different airline? Or am I only going to get a flight credit like a normal cancellation?

Watching videos from the airports and I am sooooo glad my flight got cancelled late Sunday night. fricked up plans with the kiddo, but would rather disappoint now than be stuck somewhere for days.

What a train wreck.

I am booked on them next Monday, bc they were the only outbound option with timing. United inbound that god, so only have to roll the dice once.

When they cancelled us Friday we got flight refunds (allegedly, haven't seen it credited to my card yet but they said can take up to 2 billing cycles) plus $400 in vouchers each.

Request the refund, don't just take the credit! I've read conflicting stories about southwest saying they will honor costs you incurred paying for another airline ticket. In normal cases, the answer is absolutely not. However I think they screwed up so much that they're offering to buy other airline tickets this time. Don't take my word for it until I look it up further

I'd start looking for alternative plans now. You can always cancel the other ticket last minute, maybe but a fully refundable ticket on another airline in case things aren't solved by next monday?

I flew SW from NYC to Chi yesterday... I was very fortunate it was only delayed 2 hours. Plane and pilot were there on time, but not enough crew... Finally, some dude stepped in out of nowhere (a SW flight attendant, but not working) and filled in...

I read something this morning that says that Southwest has a low-tech crew management system that automatically assumes that crewmembers get to their next scheduled destination. If someone doesn't, they are supposed to call, and an adjustment is made manually in the system.

With the mass cancellations and delays, Southwest employees are facing hours on hold to let the crew management system know that their flight was canceled and they aren't in the city that the system thinks that they should be in.

Southwest has had ancient IT for decades. Fact: the reason that Southwest doesn't have assigned seats is that they don't have the IT to do it.

SWA has hit the reset button. They are relocating planes and crews, so they can get a cohesive flight schedule initiated

1) staffing shortages at a fuel vendor in Denver

2) technology failures that stymied crew reassignments

3) unexpected fog issues at one hub

4) planned smaller schedules on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, maling it harder to rebook travelers.

** travelers affected by disruptions can submit receipts for consideration via email, or on Southwest’s website. “We will honor reasonable requests for reimbursement for meals, hotel, and alternate transportation".

I avoid the "budget" carriers and Southwest, which is no longer a budget carrier. All these airlines "we know how to do it better and cheaper". Guess what...

They f*** you at the drive through because they know you are going to be a million miles away and you can't do anything about it.

The airlines used to be very good about that, but lately not so much.

Has their lack of a hub and spoke system completely screwed them here?

Just hard to figure out how this winter storm has been so much worse for them than the other carriers.

Massive call outs in departments and even ramp crew quitting during the weather event....
