I want to see Santa Elena Canyon for sure, but are there other spots you would recommend?

Also, what would be a good hotel to stay at? I'll be getting in late Friday and leaving early Sunday.

Sounds like Pittsburgh’s QB sure impressed the National Park Service.

It's spring break, you might try Fort Stockton.

But normally Chisos Mountain lodge in the basin (for the location, not the plush accommodations - those are at the Gage in Marathon).

Other cool, old hotels are the Holland in Alpine and Limpia in Fort Davis.

Rumor going around that our new secretary of the interior is contemplating shutting down our national parks to examine the impact they have had on native populations. She apparently believes in closure as the best management strategy.

No link, just what I was told by a ranger at GSMNP.

Hike up Guadalupe Peak. Highest elevation in Texas. Over 8K

That ranger is an idiot. No way that would fly here.

Chisos Mountains are beautiful and much cooler, but I stayed on the Rio Grande before I went up there. Can't remember the drive time.

Pay $1 to the guys on the River and they’ll sneak you into Mexico to some little mud hut village. At least, they used to do that in the early 90’s. Things may have changed.

She may be, but it would be fun to watch the right and outdoorsmen fight the left over what is actually effective conservation.

This is the busiest time of the year. Try hotels in Alpine or Marathon Motel. Getting in late friday and leaving early sunday is not much time in the park so you wont have time to see alot.

This is not in Big Bend.

Boquillas Crossing is an official crossing and requires a passport. There is an unmanned station there that you talk to Agents in El Paso if you want to cross. You still take the rowboats.

Save that for the Q board.

Back here in reality, the chisos basin is the best part of big bend but it’s a wonderfully large and uncrowded park. Grab a park map and just drive around and hike a little. It’s full of surprises and the desert colors at sunset are unreal.

Guadalupe peak is in Guadalupe mountains NP and about 4 hours away.

Look for an Air B&B or VRBO in the Terlingua or Lajitas area. There are no hotels there other than the Lajitas Resort, but it's pricey. The nearest mid-sized town from Big Bend is Marfa or Alpine, TX where you may find a hotel, but that's 1 hour 30 mins from Big Bend. Also, get groceries and alcohol in those 2 towns because those things are very expensive once you get in the Big Bend area. There is only one small grocery store.

The open range down there is vast and it will feel like you are driving forever, but the views once you get down there are spectacular. Also, besides Big Bend Nation Park there is Big Bend State Park with HWY 170 providing a very scenic drive. We took it all the way from Terlingua to Presidio.

Are you camping? Hiking? Going alone? Family?

I’d say the view from the south rim is a cant miss but it’s a day’s hike

Oh, correct. I meant while he's already that far west may as well hit the GP. Even stay in El Paso maybe and eat killer authentic mexican. Pretty safe place as well.

My wife and two kids. I plan on staying at a hotel on Friday then drive in from there Saturday morning.

I figure I can see the mountain portion, desert portion, and river portion of the park in 10 hours. That's the goal, anyway.

WTF? Wow, I guess it's been awhile since I've been there...we used to float across the river to Mexico on the air mattresses that we used under our sleeping bags, calling our selves "the Gringos Mojados". Thanks, bin Laden for denying that experience for others.
