On the road again. Which hotel honors program stands out above the rest?

Not necessarily a TRAVEL board question. In the past, I was very partial to Hilton (currently have Diamond status), but haven't analyzed it enough to know the differences today (Marriott and Starwood merger, etc.).
Which one offer the most bang for its buck today? And which one offers better hotels to utilize these points when going on vacation, where one night quickly erodes all the points one has accumulated with business travel?

I used to have to travel to some pretty remote places, and there was always a Holiday inn Express nearby.
I have been a loyal IHG cardholder for 5 years or so now.
There are a ton of the every day cheap properties (HIE, candlewood, etc) and they are always acquiring newer boutique hotels (indigo, kimpton)

Hyatt is going to be the "best". But they have to do so since they have a limited number of properties compared to their competitors.

Universally, i think most people like Marriotts reward program. Apparently their Bonvoy program is pretty solid.
I'm a Hilton Diamond member, but i mainly do that because i like Homewood Suites a lot where dinner is provided most nights... and beer.
However, Hampton is the lowest of the Hilton properties and i think they're better than the lowest of the Marriott's properties. You get more points for a Doubletree, Homewood, Embassy, or Hilton Garden Inn, and i can usually find one of those for around $100 a night to get extra points.
IHG has some nice brands, but Holiday Inn Express are the most common one and they're trash. I have had a few good nights in a staybridge when i had to stay there.
Choice is pretty meh, and i have no reason to stay in a La Quinta, so those are out for me. Wyndham and Hyatt aren't in enough places to throw a few points at when Hilton and Mariott are everywhere and i'd rather build points with them.

I'm Titanium for life with Marriott and Gold with Hilton. That being said, I think Marriott points go farther, but Hilton has honestly treated me better than Marriott. Free breakfast coupons and bottled water as soon as I walk in, I don't have to ask for it. With Marriott it's like they are doing me a favor by giving me one bottle of water after I have to ask for one.

Bonvoy has better perks and points, we have 2 luxury cards so stay at a minimim of Bonvoy Gold and Hilton Gold. Try and stay Marriott when we have a chance

i will say that being a Diamond member with Hilton has been nice. I don't consider myself an uppity person, but i'll park in that "diamond member only" parking every damn time and judge everybody else there in question of whether they're really diamond.
i like to run in the afternoon's when i get off work, and Hilton will always upgrade me to a gatorade if asked and they never act like it's a problem.
and there's always cookies when i get back, if not beer at happy hour.

I think it is much easier to redeem your points at a high end property at a good value compared to IHG/Bonvoy.
I am basically stuck with Bonvoy as all of my corporate travel is geared towards their properties.

Park Hyatt 25k points, Hyatt Ziva All Inclusive adults only in Cancun 25k points. I’m Hilton Diamond but 25k Hilton points won’t get you a night at Hampton Inn in Lake Charles.

I’m a HH member mostly because we used to stay at the WA in NYC before it closed. Not a big fan because prolly less than 1/4 of our travel ends up being a Hilton property cause they just don’t have many high end properties. I think Marriot has more luxury hotels in their collection.

The bonus for Hyatt is easily attainable and gets you two free nights at any Hyatt in the world. We used ours at Park Hyatt Beaver Creek which is about $400/night in summer and could be much more expensive during winter.
Every year after you get a free night at any category 1-4 Hyatt. From my experience they treat their members well. They upgraded us to a penthouse suite in Keystone last summer just for the hell of it, and points are fairly easy to rack up if you make it your sole card.

I've wrestled with the Hilton v. Marriott debate for years. I've been a Hilton Diamond for 9 years, and really had no problems or regrets except for that Hilton has been devaluing points (increasing the pts necessary to redeem a free reward night) quietly for years.
Once the Marriott/SPG merger happened, I decided to start focusing on building status with Marriott, and I'm glad I have. The set-rate for point redemption nights with Bonvoy is AMAZING. Not a moving target like Hilton. Each category of hotel has a set point value for travel redemption. Whereas Hilton will jack up certain mmore desirable properties during peak times.
My goal now is to maintain diamond with hilton by hitting the 30 stays (that's the easiest path for me). For everything over that, I'm focused on Marriott. Through a promotion and having a marriott branded credit card, I received 25 night credits toward status this year alone. I should be able to hit Titanium easily.
Whichever program has the best promotion for a given quarter is where I'm focusing my stays. Having a large point balance with each program has been nice too.

I just looked at both sites for a Gulf beach vacation on 8/13. Marriott has a nice, new Spring Hill on Navarre where we stayed last year. It is 35k points. IHG has a new Indigo in Gulf Shores for 45k points. They also want 40k points for an Express in Foley and in GS not on the beach- pure ripoff. They also do not let you use points at the Express in Orange Beach even though they have availability on that random date (Tuesday).
With Marriott you can stay on the beach in Fort Walton for 25k points on same date.
I do have a “no fee” IHG card and pay for and cancel the Marriott every other year or so to get more points.
Marriott has more promotions to accrue more points. I do not see any value in Hilton properties and Concur ultimately dictates if I stay in IHG or Marriott. I guess if I could go 100% Marriott I would.
