How bad is it these days? I have a 1:00 pm flight out on a Tuesday and will be returning a rental car. So how early do I need to get to the airport? Thanks!

I have actually had very few problems there.

Had a 10:30 am flight yesterday. Super easy. 5 minutes thru tsa

The two factors that would play most into my decision would be is if you're checking bags and did you plan to eat lunch before your flight?
Personally, I would plan to get to the rental return at like 10:30 to give myself plenty of time to sit and enjoy lunch before boarding because I am not a fan of the quick grab and go food options at MSY.
The ride from the rental return to the main terminal is around 10/15 minutes so add on that, time to check luggage if you are and then security would depend on if you have pre-check, clear, etc. but security there does move relatively fast as compared to places like MCO.

If you're returning rental car give yourself at least 30 extra minutes. Checking bags matters also but not as much as the car shuttle.
Security has been a breeze since school is back in session
At least after you return the car you don't have to deal with driving the absolutely stupid roads, turns, signage. They designed that place as nearly impossible to figure out where you're going.

Drop the car off at 11:30 and you’ll be fine.

This is the only problem. Rental Car center is nowhere near the terminal now, have to take the shuttle and all that, so that could take a minute.
But TSA is USUALLY a breeze

I don't check luggage and have Pre Check. I walk in the building 30 mins before boarding (50 mins before flight) and that gives me time to hit the bathroom and grab a coffee.

Left a lot of unanswered - Are you checking a bag, do you have pre-check, etc etc.
11:15 gives you plenty of time. Rental car return will only take 15 minutes to drop off and ride to the new terminal.

OP here, sorry. I won’t be checking a bag. I do have Pre-Check.

Then you can get there at 11:15-11:30. You'll go from dropping off the rental to being at the gate in 20-30 minutes max (including TSA and Rental Car Drop Off). You'll still have 30 minutes to play with before your flight even starts to board.

I do it a lot, as I fly to New Orleans, drive to BR, then drive back to NO then fly home to Dallas. Yesterday, I left BR at 5 p.m., in rush hour traffic, made it to the rental car facility at 6:20 p.m., just missed the first rental bus, second bus driver was taking her sweet time, but we still got to the airport at 6:50, only person in TSA line, walked to Gate B2 for Southwest Flight, arrived at gate at 6:55 p.m. and boarded easily at 7:05 p.m. for my 7:30 p.m. flight to Dallas. Getting to the rental car facility 1 hour and 15 minutes is probably pushing it for my comfort zone. I prefer to arrive at the rental car facility about 1 hour and 20-30 minutes before my flight. FYI - I don't check luggage and I have TSA pre. Also, I fly Southwest. Last Saturday, I did the same thing, but I left BR 2.5 hours before my flight, arrive at Rental Car Facility in an hour, took shuttle bus to airport (about 20 minutes) and I had about 25 minutes to spare before boarding. It was also a Saturday late afternoon flight. These are real time numbers from the last 6 days. Hope this helps.

You drive to DFW/DAL from Waco, then fly to MSY to drive to BTR? That sounds like the third circle of hell.

Since you just said on a Tuesday and not which Tuesday, I will throw this out there with a holiday around the corner. If it's the day after Labor Day, you may want to prepare for a slightly slower security process.
They don't always do it, but days on and around holidays they will sometimes have the dogs walking behind all of the travelers (2 at a time) as you maneuver through the security line.

It's an hour and 20 minutes from my house in Waco to Dallas Love Field and an hour from NO Airport to LSU. How is that bad? Hell, most people in Houston, Austin and Dallas drive that far to get to an airport or even downtown. You obviously don't know much about geography.
I could drive from Waco to BR, but it takes 7 hours each way and I am exhausted. At least with this scenario, I only drive about 2.5 hours each way. Love Field and Southwest are so easy. I do this trip about 15 - 20 times per year.

The airport is about the only thing in New Orleans that works worth a dam.

Surprisingly not bad. I'm the first person to shite on Nola when I get a chance, but the new airport is nice and fairly efficient for being Nola.

It’s the slowest I’ve ever encountered from Africa to Asia.
Taxes, death and slow baggage claim at MSY.
Undeniable and consistent as the sun rising in the east.
