Can anyone quickly figure out how to sail a boat? Or does it take a lot of experience?

If you don't know what you're doing in a sailboat things can go wrong quickly. Wouldn't recommend for beginners other than dinghy's and catamarans. Go nuts on those. But bigger boats... nope.

We're going back to KW in November. It's been a while but my favorite restaurant years ago was Turtle Kraals. I hear it closed recently. Any news?

It’s been closed for awhile. Another restaurant is in that building now.

The good news is that there are many restaurant options there that are much better than that place.

For the same price you can rent your own boat for half a day, sail out with a a meal you bought on shore and have a better and more private experience IMO.
My wife and I eat lunch at Latitudes every time we go to Key West. We have an entree and a drink or two and easily sign out under $150. Or are you referring to staying on the property ? Yeah that is expensive.

Two Friends Patio has shrimp and grits, and live music early in the morning.

Schooner Wharf is our favorite overall place. Just an old open air bar right on the water.

Lobster Shack on South Street has delicious Lobster rolls.

Boat House Bar and Grill has good food, it's the old Turtle Kraal's.

Hogs Breath Saloon has live music all afternoon, we like hanging out there.

Lagerhead's - stand ankle deep in ocean and watch the boats pass by.

Mallory square gets crowded but its worth one visit, just to cross it off the list.

Visit Capt Tony's and try to throw a quarter in the fish mouth.

My best advice is get a hotel in old town, and just take off wandering. The old houses are cool to look at, there's a bar, restaurant, or shop on every corner. We've been over a dozen times and still find something new and different every trip.

Mornings at the Green Parrot.

Day drinking at the Green Parrot.

Around 2000-ish me and a buddy were there and starting chatting with the guy sitting next to us whilst also having many noon time beers. As time passed I asked the guy about his rolex (it looked old), then he stated telling stories and then come to find out after about 3 hours of beers and house bought shots we were chatting with Bob Segar. He was just by himself at a corner bar stool just like any other person would be on a random Tuesday.

Strike Zone Charters in Big Pine Key. They do small group snorkel and dive charters out to Looe Reef. They are very professional and very friendly.

Danger Charters in Key West. They take small groups out in a sail boat several miles then anchor near some mangrove islands. They offload a bunch of kayaks and you get to spend some time kayaking in and around the islands. Mangrove islands are like marine life nurseries and natural sanctuaries. Lots of neat things to see. When you get back to boat you get to snorkel for awhile. That parts just ok because you aren’t on a reef so not near the stuff to see but it’s still enjoyable.
Then while sailing back they treat you to wine and fruits/cheeses and you get to watch the sunset into the sea from the sailboat.

Fly out to Dry Tortugas.

Shark Fishing Charter out of Marthon. Several good Captains to choose from.

Hang out at Bahia Honda State Park. The beach on the southeast side is usually less crowded and the better beach. While you are swimming glance over to the bridge to the next key which is only a couple hundred yards away and try not to freak out thinking about the 20 ft Great Hammerhead that lives under that bridge. His name is Big Moe.

As another post mentioned and I concur…eat at El Siboney Cuban restaurant in Key West. It is fantastic. They also have a location in Marathon.

Santiago’s Bodega is always a must eat for us.
El Mason de Pepe is legit Cuban food as well.
Green Parrot for day drinks.

Conch Republic or Boat House Bar & Grill to have drinks and people watch as the boats come in

Every morning do something water related (Jet Ski Tour, Tarpon Fishing, Snorkel Tour, Sandbar Tour, Dry Tortugas Etc.) Go get a late lunch when you get back. Bar Hop in the afternoon. Go to Dinner. One morning skip the water and go to Blue Heaven. I like to eat lunch at the Bar on the Deck at Louie's once. There is always a good bartender with a lot of stories there and you are looking out at the Atlantic while you drink and eat.
