The sad part is they waited for a significant police/security presence before canceling the flight
Seeing the crowd that flies Spirit I don't blame them one bit for this

No thanks. In fact I’m pretty much capping SWA flights at 90 minutes now. Anything more than that I want Delta, United, American, etc.

Spirits is fine for direct flights. Pay the extra and get the big chairs in the front.

If it’s a direct less than 2 hours I’d use them but that’s about it

Last time I was on SWA was to MSY in 2019 and a fat girl sat next to me. Tbh I've fared far better on Delta's basic economy- at least there I don't have to worry about holding my screen

Flew New Years MSY to Cancun, Mexico. Less than two hours there. On the way back to MSY, one hour 36 mins. My cousin owns a travel agency, she had us flying from Nashville, ATL and MSY. She also locks us in for any delays or cancellations, then handles it from there. She use to not use Spirit, but since they merged with Jet Blue, it’s gotten better.

THose super cheap airlines are a roll of the dice. 1/10 times you get royally screwed one way or another. 9/10 times you are fine.

Contrast that with the mainline carriers where you get screwed 1/20 times, but they are a lot more accommodating and will help you recover. That's the big value add.

I got bent over by Breeze last year this time. Next week flying Delta to CHS through ATL for much more money because Breeze screwed up so bad and wouldn't help me recover at all.

My family and I were flying right after Xmas during the big SWA screwup. They bent over backwards to make it right and I ended up making money on the deal with vouchers and reimbursements.

It's the way they handle canceling flights. You'll be boarded and wait for hours before they usher you off the plane saying too bad. They may have you show up the next day and do the same exact thing again. This happened to a friend of mine trying to vacation in California for an extended weekend. By the time they actually had a flight for him the weekend was almost over.

Too add, if it’s non-stop, odds are way better to not have major problems. When you get into connecting flights, that’s where you might have problems.
We had Spirit for New Years, only the connecting flight had problems. The connecting flight was cancelled, but my cousin, the travel agent, had another flight lined up before the original flight had touched down. A travel agent can track every flight that their folks are on.

I think it's helpful to consider it more as public transportation. Understand the fees, and only take direct flights as Spirit's model doesn't leave any alternative options if there are issues. If possible, book a SW flight on points an hour or two after Spirit flight and cancel once about to board or cancel Spirit at the first sign of delay.

It's not bad at all if you get the big front seat. But if you sit from the wings back you'll be in some shite.

They were horrible, but lately I haven't heard anything terrible about them. My daughter just flew from NorCal to La without issues.

Recently booked Spririt from Nola to Orlando straight shot for $78 per person round trip.

12:30 pm departure delayed to 4:30 pm. Oh boy.

4:30 pm delayed to 6:30 pm.

6:30 pm delayed to 8:30 pm. Oh boy.

We boarded the plane at 9:30 pm, sat on the plane for 2 hrs having never pushed back from the gait until 11:30 pm, only to deplane because our flight had been cancelled at 11:30 pm.

Got off plane, got our luggage, checked into Holliday Inn on Veterans at 1 am, only to set alarm for 4 am to be at airport and do all the security bullshite again to catch the 6:50 am flight. We arrived in Orlando exhausted, and way too early to check in to our hotel.

Other people missed a family wedding altogether. What a waste.

NEVER. EVER. FLYING. SPIRIT AIRLINES. EVER. AGAIN.

And I was warned ("good luck if your plane takes off on time" and "good luck with your connections") by a few people, but laughed it off.

Boy, were they right.

Spirit gave us $7 per person voucher for food while we ate in the airport.

A lot pf people were genuinely pissed off after spending an entire day at the airport.

I have had ok experiences with Spirit but after my most recent trip will never fly Spirit again for many of the reasons posted. Have a buddy who is a Captain for Spirit and he explained it to me that their biggest issue is along the same lines as what screwed Southwest recently. They fly point to point routes and lack true hubs. So if anything gets behind then it starts to have a downstream snowball effect. They often have planes at the gate but will lack the crew to fly them. And given that they don't code share they have no way to move their crews around.
