Is Spirit Airlines really that bad?

I’ve flown Spirit once or twice ( to Vegas & Houston) & never had a problem. I feel like you get what you pay for.

We’re going to Disney in September for a week and then leaving there and flying straight to Los Angeles for the Saints/Rams game. Since all my money is going to Disney & LA, I’m not looking to spend a shite ton on airfare (not an OT baller). The price difference between Spirit & Delta/Southwest/United is pretty significant.

What do y’all say?

Flew Spirit roundtrip to/from Detroit a few years back.

No problems at all. Cost WAY less than any other airline, and had perfect departure times.

I'd easily do it again-- but only for a direct non-stop flights. I've heard stories of folks getting seriously delayed (as in overnight) with no refund/lodging, etc. on multi-leg trips.

#1 most on time airline believe it or not.

You get what you pay for with spirit. If you go in knowing that, you are fine.

On that long of a flight I am springing for the big seats. Everything else should be fine.

Ive been twice, both times simply because I had no luggage, otherwise cost would not have less than Delta.

Its like Carnival Cruises, different clientele

Luggage is an issue too. I need to check into pricing for that as well

If you are taking luggage, which you will be for those trips, then get another airline.

It’s something like $37 to bring a carry on each way. Might not be that much cheaper than Southwest.

IF you can travel out of a backpack spirit really is the GOAT airline for pricing plus on time performance.

Exactly, anything 4 days or less I can fit everything in a backpack and iron at the hotel if it gets wrinkled. I've never paid to have my backpack as a carry on and have had no issues. In fact I've tried once in MSY to pay and the Spirit agent laughed and said it was fine.

Honestly, the flight experience doesn't bother me at all. The real problem is they may cancel your flight one hour before takeoff for absolutely no reason.

Disney then LA is going to require more than just a backpack, but if you can fit two people packed up into one bag under 40 pounds, then just check it and each bring on your personal item.

Yep. Allowed dimensions for a "personal item" (no charge) at Spirit is 8" X 14" X 18". Bigger than a standard backpack; some places sell "hard" luggage pieces about this size. Did a mock-up of the size using cardboard for a co-worker before a flight a couple of years ago, looks like this (that's a standard 8 1/2 X 11" sheet of paper on top):

If you’re going on a short trip somewhere and can get by with a backpack and personal item and it’s not the end of the world if you’re delayed, Spirit is a good choice. Under any other circumstances, choose another airline.

they delayed a flight from AUS-MSY by 2 hours, then UNDELAYED it back to the original time like an hour before the takeoff time.

missed the flight, but they gave us some vouchers or whatever. we were staying with friends so it wasn't a disaster but that's a bad way to do business.

I fly Spirit a lot, love the pricing, but I never carry luggage. I have traveled all over the world with nothing but a small backpack that is well within the dimensions allowed by Spirit. A couple of tricks I use are to wear a "travel" type sport coat that has numerous internal pockets for stashing stuff, even underwear and socks. I carry my Bose headphones around my neck, and other electronics are in my coat pockets, leaving more room in the backpack for clothing.

Don't try wearing 8 shirts and 10 pairs of pants onto the plane to avoid a bag fee.

The only time i have ever used them was for two flights direct to Orlando from NOLA and I have never experienced a delay or cancellation.

That being said, I think I read it on here and someone summed it up perfectly...Spirit and Frontier are great....until they're not. When they're bad, THEY'RE REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD.
