couple of tricks I use are to wear a "travel" type sport coat that has numerous internal pockets for stashing stuff, even underwear and socks.
I’d much rather pay the $30 or whatever for an extra bag than travel with my socks and underwear in my pockets.

Just flew spirit last minute on Sunday.
I spent an extra $22 for the big front seats. Those were extremely comfortable and completely worth it. I brought on a backpack that was slightly larger than their stated measurements for a personal item and nobody batted an eye.
No in flight WiFi or entertainment would suck for a longer trip, but it’s fine for short flights.

I say you should probably take me with you. I can bring a bigger bag and take some of your things

Flew spirit to Vegas from Houston and was delayed like 7 hrs...flight back was on time. Other than that the flights were fine, we packed our stuff in backpacks to avoid the extra fees.

Great price for slim people and if only bringing a carry-on....otherwise the value goes away. IMHO
I pretty much always have a suitcase, so Southwest or American from Dallas ... United has a couple of good flights as well.

Just booked spirit for first time in December from nola to Boston for pats/chiefs game. Fingers crossed. I like the backpack idea. We'll only be there for 2 days so that should prob work.
