Delayed and canceled flights, lost luggage, and having to rent cars coming and going to get to my destination. First time I have flown them that I can remember. Are they usually this bad?

On a positive their call center was on the ball helping me shuffle flights.

I'm in Dallas and so fly them often. I would say 50% of the flights I'm on are delayed or they lose my luggage. The lost luggage is always on international flights.

I don't like American's laid back casual style and atmosphere.

You know that delayed flights sometimes are a good thing?

Would you wanna get on a flight that has plane issues??? I would rather NOT.

Or bad weather..........no airline has any control over weather.

Yeah I regularly have delays, but never anything too bad.

I did have a flight delayed out of Des Moines coming back from Iowa state which would’ve missed my Chicago connection, but they paid for a hotel room and dinner that night.

I had luggage lost a few years ago going into DCA, but it was on another plane and they delivered it to my brothers house.

Yes I stopped flying them last year for similar reasons. Switched to Delta and the grass is a little greener, only having first world problems now

Everyone has their airlines that they prefer, but I despise AA. I've never had a smooth trip with them and avoid at all costs now.

I have to fly American to OKC from BTR and don’t like it at all, The past couple of times have been filled with nothing but delays and delayed bags. Don’t recall having a positive experience when flying American.

Would united through houston be any better? That's your only other choice

If only I could. American is the government contract carrier when flying from BTR to OKC.

I am sure everyone has their experiences but I fly about 150-175 flight segments a year. So far this year one has been Southwest and all others have been delta. As a business traveler I need to be on time. I can’t trust American to get me there on time. That means I have to either build in more time, arrive a day earlier, or risk getting stuck places. If I was a leisure traveler and price sensitive it may work. However I personally don’t fly them.

Thanks everyone. After my experiences I don’t plan to use them again, unless I get a free voucher somehow.

I fly all major airlines pretty regularly and feel like they all have issues with delays. Last week all 4 legs of a vacation on Delta were delayed. It happens. American hasn't been any worse than Delta, SW and United for me. I've had the best luck with Jet Blue and Alaskan.

AA has always been the worst about cancelling flights. They used to have no excuse, but these days pilots are becoming scarce, due to retirement combined with fewer hires. They have the largest fleet in the world and there are a couple dozen airworthy planes sitting idle at MIA and DFW bases at most any given time. More planes sitting around than available crews on standby.

Look........I am a corporate travel agent. Have been for 23 years.

ALL the airlines have delays and lost bags. All of them.

I have been dealing with nothing but United cancelled flights for weeks now.
It depends where you are going to and where your plane is coming from.

Just because you are in Phoenix and its clear and pretty.........your plane may be coming from New York with crap weather.

Just saying............no one is better than the other.

You bring up a fantastic point. Airlines all have issues. One differentiator I see is whether a flight is mainline carrier or a subsidiary. I fly out of MSY to not use BTR to avoid Delta connection, despite my love for Delta.

I don’t mind American. It’s not the best airline but BTR -> DFW is my most common flight. They also fly a lot of places so it’s oretty convenient. Their point transfers are pretty good too.

Probably. I have never had a great flight although they have always taken me where I want to go safely. But last week a booking error by a 3rd party had me with 2 one way tickets DFW-MSY but no return. A call to AA customer service got me a return ticket with the one way ticket amount applied and no change fee. The guy also noticed my name was misspelled and changed that with no fee. That was surprising and very welcome.
Then back to business as usual. The return flight was canceled.
