How do y’all choose?

How does you choose where to go on vacation next?
Wife (no pics) and I have been married two years, both around age 30. We’re located in Bham and we’ve been to a few places around here - Chattanooga, Savannah, Asheville, Nashville. We’re trying to go on a vacation or two over the next couple of years before we have kids (God willing). But there’s so many options when you don’t limit yourself to driving distance - we don’t know where to start. So I’m just wondering how y’all narrow down the list of places you want to go when it’s time for your next trip. Y’all are much more veteran in this than I am.

Time. Place. Money.
Start there. Fill in the blanks for the board and I'm sure you'll get some great answers.

Make a short list of places y’all want to go and the time of year. Wait until a special pops up for one of those places - predominantly cheap airfare.
Booked France and Argentina trips that way. Still have Turkey, Greece/Croatia, Japan, Chile on the short list. As soon as cheap flights come up to any of those places, we are ready to book within 24 hours.
Also have a dream trip that you are always planning/saving for. Our is a two week African safari.
Then always have a go to place in the states that is easy to book and y’all enjoy in case no specials come through. For us it’s, National Parks and/or NYC.

My wife and I are around the same age as you and yours — our trips consist of restaurants, bars / cocktail bars and hiking (if available).
For the US, pretty much narrow to time of year. We try not to leave Chicago in the summer because it’s great. If we do, prefer a weekend trip that only requires a short plane ride (MSP, NYC, Boston / Cape are the main ones). Obviously, during the winter months, I’ll aim somewhere a bit warmer. Spring and fall is a little difficult because the weather is pleasant across the US. Usually, try to find a city that has a Badger bar. This spring, I was in Charleston and was able to find a Wisconsin bar to watch the Big Ten Tournament game.
Internationally, wife has relatives that live in Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. Haven’t been since COVID, but that’s a trip we aim to do in January and February. I always felt that’s a great time to visit SE Asia and Australia.

Well google is a good start. I’m around your age and married 4 years. We are def trying to branch out and see new things. One thing I often do is think of places from movies that I thought looked really interesting and then maybe do some research on a trip there if you think that place would be worth the time. Hope y’all figure it out and have some good times ahead.

As a new-ish parent with a 2 year old, take advantage of going to some farther away places while you can. Now that we have a little one, we definitely feel more limited on where we can go. Coming from someone who doesn't want to attempt to keep a mask on a 2 year old on a plane anyways...hopefully that will be over with by the time you all have children.

For Domestic travel my goal is to travel to all 50 states. I use that as my guide and where to go next (I am at 39 right now, adding 4 more this year).
For International whatever captures my imagination. This year I am going to Bolivia, next year to Belize and South Africa.
Generally all of my trips are centered around my hobbies of hunting and fishing, and I prefer to travel alone

You live 2 hours from ATL, the places around the world you can fly to under $500 RT may surprise you.

Its pretty easy. We have a list of places we want to go and will regularly check flights.
My wife will routinely just look at flight costs on google flights. If she's a low cost flight to somewhere remotely interesting, we will decide if we want to go there. the end.

You don't have places you want to go? I have an almost infinite list of places I want to visit.
Also, consider things or events you want to see. Some things are better in person and some things may not be visiting that city for in an event they are hosting. For example, the Olympics is likely much better in certain cities and countries than others.

If you are truly overwhelmed with potential spots, download Secret Travel app. Input your desired airport and they will send you alerts when cheap flights come up from that airport.

I mean, surely there places neither of you have been that you’re interested in visiting. Each of you make a list, find ones you agree on, research it and decide if it’s in your budget and it’s a place you want to go.
All of my wife’s places are places her friends have recently gone.

Haha. I know that feeling. I’ve expressed interest in Croatia for a while now and the wife completely dismissed it - repeatedly. Her best friend went a few months ago and guess what is at the top of her list?

We went to Croatia in 2017 and have been wanting to go back since the day we left.

Now that I think about it, we’ve done majority beach/Caribbean vacations and West Coast/wine country trips over the past decade for the two of us.
And we plan a lot of other trips around sporting events and concerts etc
I’d like to do more outdoors, mountains, national parks type stuff soon. It’ll be easier in a few years once the kids get a little bit older.

A good place to start is Google.com/flights. Type in Birmingham as the airport of choice and the first things that pop up are some low fares to different destinations from Birmingham. As someone else mentioned you are two hours from ATL and there are a lot of inexpensive, direct flights to the Caribbean or anywhere in the world. Chicago, Washington D.C. NYC are all great destinations and quick trips for you.
