Flying into Denver, staying at Keystone. Do I need to rent a car?
Going in February. We will need a big suburban (like Mick Jagger sings about) to haul everybody. That will cost over 2K for the week, even with wiping out all my Hertz points. I see they offer a shuttle to and from the airport. Not real fired up about a 2hr shuttle, but whatever. Would you just use the shuttle and then uber if you want to leave the resort, or do you think I should rent the car? I have never been out there. Tia

Can’t help with the shuttle, but Do you have 2 people that can drive? Cheaper to rent 2 vehicles?

I went for the first time this past February and this is what we did. Depending on where you are staying in Keystone there isn't much need for a vehicle once you're there.

the car is always a nice luxury/option, but the shuttle isn't that bad

...but I will add that I have yet to use the shuttle with kids, so

I know they change everything

The kids will be alright on the shuttle I think. They’ll grab some device and stare at it the whole time. I’m more concerned about being dependent on the shuttle to get us to and fro the airport in a timely fashion, considering it’s a 2hr ride. I assume they have several running back and forth?

Keystone is pretty small, are you staying at the base? You would use the car once there very minimally.

I would probably shuttle and just make sure you schedule the ride back with plenty of time for your flight.

Worst case is you could always take 2 taxis to the airport and that's likely well under $2000.

How big is your family? If you have over 5 people its going to be difficult to fit that many people plus ski luggage into a suburban.

We went last year, had some friends that rented a car that we rode with there and took the shuttle back to the airport. Shuttle ride was about 2.5 hours because they pick up people at a couple different resorts. The shuttle was just a big passenger van. It picked us up pretty early, I believe around 4am and we made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare.

Welp that settles it. I’m parting with some coin

Do you have a Costco membership? We have been able to book through Costco Travel and get Minivans for around $400 for a week on past ski trips. Also ask any family members/friends for their corporate code to book through Enterprise, they never ask for proof you work there.

Also compare booking at a non airport location. You could probably save money by Uber from the airport and come back to pick up your family

Yes. I'd def rent a car. Stressful to worry about shuttles and being at the mercy of their schedules.

You can get a private shuttle. Whether you need a car while there depends on where you are staying in the resort. Keystone is small

I use TURO (rent someone’s car) usually about $800 for a week in a decked out 4wd surburban. In Feb I’m renting two 4 door wranglers For about $900.

The shuttles suck and you will want a car to explore around

Are you comfortable driving in snowy conditions? Especially once you get through the tunnel on I-70, it can be pretty hairy depending on the weather. Like chains on tires hairy. Also you won’t be driving much if at all at Keystone.

Why would they want to explore around in the middle of winter, in a car? Serious question. You go to Keystone to ski, as it is not a true "ski town" with very little to do outside of the base of the mountain. If they aren't from a snowy city, I really would not suggest going for joy rides through crap conditions??

They can Uber anywhere needed if they really wanted to go to one specific place.

Shuttle and once you're there you really don't need to go anywhere else.

I love Keystone. I’d rent two cheaper cars if that’s possible.

Shuttled from Denver several times and it was fine. Those companies know what they are doing. And just less hassle for you.
