We will be spending 5 nights in Florence the first part of June. Will be taking couple day trips from there. What part of Florence is best to stay in? Wife, me and 12 yr old. Airbnb or hotel?

You want to stay in the historic area on the Right/North side of the Arno River, probably

We stayed at Hotel Davanzati near the River which was amazing and perfect for our purposes.

If staying on the other side you want to stay in Santo Spirito as I recall

Its been awhile

Here's a good link with a breakdown

We stayed in Florence View Apartments! (Trip Advisor)

Booking.com Listing

On the river. Centrally located. All the amenities you'd want. Feels like home!

We stayed at a more modern Hilton Garden Inn ( I had points to use), a little bit more northwest of town center. Decent place, would stay again for good a/c.

VRBO Near the Cathedral of Stanta Maria del Fiore

We rented an apartment a block and a half from the Duomo. It is on the top floors (multiple floors) of a building built in the 1400s. The very top has a small outdoor patio where we watched the sun set each evening. The views are stunning. It was the most interesting place I ever stayed on vacation and I will rent it again when I go back. The one drawback is that you have to climb seven flights of stairs to the top (123 stairs, to be precise). Regardless, even my wife and daughters thought that the climb was worth the views.

No matter where you stay, you should be fairly close to whatever you want to see. Florence is not huge geographically so if your family doesn't mind walking, you never need to get ground transportation around the city. Excursions to the countryside, as you might expect, are a different story. You will have a great time no matter where you stay. Enjoy.

I have also stayed at the Davanzati.
Great place. Small, family run hotel, centrally located near the Duomo. Easy walking distance to fine restaurants and most places you will want to go.
It is my favorite place to stay in Florence, other than a villa outside of town.

Wew stayed across the river overlooking the duomo and the Ponte Vecchio. Great location and quick walk to the sites in town.

Our view.

We stayed at the Hotel Lungardo. Right in the heart of Florence and right near the Ponte Vecchio. Great hotel and location.

Santo Spirito is my favorite area to stay. It is on the “local” side of the river with great restaurants, but just a 10 min walk to Ponte Vechio where the tourist center begins.

We stayed outside of Florence and took the train into town. Made doing other day trips alittle easier. And you couldn’t beat the house Chianti, Prosecco, bread, and cheese. Homemade Italian dinners every night.
