Haven't flown in well over a year due to my wife having a baby. We are now looking to get out of the country for a few days down to Mexico, and wow, tickets are expensive. Flight for two from Shreveport or Dallas to Cancun are $1,000 +. Would it be better to wait and see if air traffic slows down and tickets go down?

Prices in most markets (adjusted for inflation) is at historic lows. Sure; there are some outliers. You can get from Tampa to Scotland right now for less than $400 round trip. Direct flights to London for the same. Departing from ORL is even cheaper.

Lots of inconsistency these days, especially with inflexibility…we just booked MSY>BNA round trip on SWA for $380 each (3/1-3/3). I think that’s super pricey but we need the non-stops on a Fri-Sun itinerary (Spirit wasn’t much better)

I’ll cancel/rebook when there’s a big drop in a few weeks…but I’d happily pay extra for 2 hours of travel than upwards of 6-7 hours connecting.

This past week LOT had a r/t $198 economy for this December

Of course you had to take off from LAX and visit your aunt in WAW

Flight prices go up and down depending on timing, schedules, demand, and a ton of other factors. If they're pricing out SHV-CUN at $500, someone must be willing to pay that or you're looking right around Christmas.

Set up some Google flight alerts that can track prices for you and when they come down to a reasonable price book it. You can always rebook flights now and get additional flight credits for the difference, all the airlines implemented this during covid.

When were you looking to fly?

I always drive to a major airport now to fly. Dfw/ iah/ or msy. Those regional ones will knock your block off right now.

Gas, time in car, parking. It all adds up.

If it’s a $250 or more difference, then it’s probably a good idea to drive to a larger airport. Aside from that, I would fly from the local regional airport.

Try Google Flights if you aren't already.

Flight prices are very low so you should be finding deals. Also, SHV is where I grew up and is notoriously expensive especially considering DFW/IAH are a few hours away. You may actually be able to find a better deal out of MLU/AEX.

You think. You are looking to go to Mexico, during Spring Break.

It is like they have historical knowledge of travel demand, amazing.

Yes timing is everything.

We are choosing to Fly out on the Tuesday after easter instead of the Monday mainly to save almost $100 per person.

Just have to be flexible and make it work.

If not its part of the price you pay for choosing those types of destinations.

And honestly $450 per person is pretty average out of SHV. You can also try flying to the new Tulum Airport as it may have better fares since airlines are just starting service.

2 problems...

1. Spring break time will cost much more than any other besides holidays.

2. Spring sales haven't happened yet. It's too early to book March. Look in early January or possibly right before Christmas. You're also stuck because you don't have any competition in Shreveport.

If your dates are flexible you can use the Southwest low fare calendar to find dates with the cheaper flights. Sure you would have to drive over to Love Field in Dallas instead of Shreveport but I often find the savings to be worth it for flights to Mexico. Especially with Southwest allowing two checked bags per person at no additional cost. I know Southwest gets some hate sometimes but I’ve never had any issues with them.

Shreveport is always outrageous to fly out of. The price to fly out of Shreveport is calculated by taking whatever Southwest charges your buddy at work and multiplying it by 4. That is for the privilege to fly to an airport that basically forces you to leave at 6 AM and return at 10:30 PM.
