Looking for a couples’ trip to a city in the northeast, what are your recommendations?

Lake placid, the finger lakes, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard should be at the top of your list

Or rockport Maine
Or kennebunkport Maine
Or Burlington Vermont
Or Newburyport mass
Or Portsmouth nh
Or the berkshires
Or pretty much any coastal Maine town

Point being…you can’t go wrong. It’s all amazing. We suffer the winters for a reason up here.

What type of things are you interested in? If just doing a single city trip, the obvious answer is Boston. If looking for somewhere smaller and more scenic, there are a ton of places in Maine or somewhere like Nantucket further south.

I wouldn’t consider Finger Lakes part of New England, but it is a great summer destination with the lakes and waterfalls. Lake Placid isn’t New England either, but close enough. The Adirondacks are a great compliment to a summer Vermont trip. It has taller hills, er “mountains,” more lakes, but less neat small towns.

My wife and I went in July of 2018. Stayed in Boston a couple days, went to Newport, RI for a day, then went to Mount Washington in NH, then Portland, ME on our way back to Boston. Everything in the area is beautiful and the weather was fantastic. That trip is at the very top of my list of favorite trips.

Skaneateles Lake is the spot. Take a boat out on the lake then have lunch at Doug's Fish Fry.

Cape cod with Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard mixed in. We stayed in Yarmouth which I thought was perfectly located on the cape. Close to Hyannis where the ferries run and stays were much cheaper there than in Chatham.

Lots of different sights and beaches to check out on the cape. The National seashore near the outer cape is really cool. Wellfleet has an old school drive in movie theater. We had a great meal at Skippers Chowder house in Yarmouth. We did a coastal Maine / cape cod trip last summer with flights to Boston. I wouldn’t suggest that combo trip like we did bc the amount of driving was a little much. I left wishing we’d had more time on Cape Cod .

I spent a week here a couple weeks back for work. Really want to bring the wife out for a long weekend.

Really surprised how much I enjoyed it out there.

Agree with this.
- We spent a week in Maine (Bar Harbor, Camden, Portland) and then a day in NH (N. Conway) in August about 5 years ago.
- Then a week+ in Massachusetts (Cape Cod, Boston) and a day in Newport RI last summer.
- Then we did a foliage trip last fall in southern Vermont and western Mass (Berkshires) plus eastern NY for about a week.

And we've driven around western & upstate NY; finger lakes area, Lake Placid, Lake George, etc. several times over the years.

These were all road trips from NC.

It's all good. Wouldn't want to live there but love visiting.

Portsmouth NH is a really cool town. Kittery Maine right across the state line from Portsmouth has a nice downtown area. Bangor Maine has great beer. Old Orchard Beach is an awesome prototypical N.E. beach town. And I can't recommend a drive up to Acadia National Park enough... Grab some Lobsta at one of the shacks along the way.

Depending on what scenery you want, here are some suggestions.

NH- Wolfeboro (Lake Winnipesaukee), North Conway or Jackson (Eastern NH) Littleton/Bethlehem/Franconia (Western NH), Hanover (SW NH right at crossroads of two interstates).

VT- Woodstock or Manchester (Southern VT), Waitsfield/Warren (Central VT, Sugarbush area), Stowe/Waterbury, Burlington.

There any number of ways to go. Route 302 is a nice drive through NH. Both Route 2 and 15 bring you through some peaceful rural towns through the NEK in VT. Route 7 and 4 make a good long loop from Burlington back to I-89/91, taking you through Middlebury and Woodstock. A slight detour on this route would bring you to the Calvin Coolidge Historic Site.

I’m not a big fan of Cape Cod or Boston. I personally prefer Providence, RI and Newport. I’m a huge fan of Block Island and love the Spring House hotel there. Another choice of mine would be Sag Harbor particularly Barrons Cove Hotel. An under the radar beautiful hotel is The Ocean House in Watchill, Ri. Taylor swift owns the house two doors down from the hotel. Conan OBrien lives in the neighborhood as well.
If you fly into Providence airport all these places are pretty accessible.

That’s disingenuous. His family still has a house there that he says he visits occasionally. Conan lives in Los Angeles.

Also, to each their own, but Providence over Boston is an interesting position to take.
